There are various opinions regarding when the gender debate begins. Some believe it commenced with the completed work by Jean de Meun’s Roman de la Rose (1269, 1278). The work is the product of two authors with the first 4000 lines written by Guillaume de Lorris between 1269 and 1278 and the remainder by Jean de Meun. The first quarter of the story, which belongs to de Lorris, is an allegorical account of a young man’s experience with courtly love.
