Mary Tudor, First Queen of England During the Elizabethan Era, there were many important rulers who made considerable changes to England. One of these people was Mary Tudor. Mary Tudor, esteemed at first, later was donned the nickname “Bloody Mary” for the things she had done during her time on the throne. When she succeeded to the throne, her goal was to make Catholicism the main religion in England. In spite of that, things did not go entirely according to her plan and ended up hurting her cause more than helping. Born in England, 1516, Mary Tudor was birthed to Katherine of Aragon and Henry VIII and was their only child who survived past infancy (Ashby). Since Katherine never recognized him as the head of the Church of England her daughter Mary refused as well. Despite these changes for England's religion, Mary continuously practiced Catholic mass regardless of her father’s decision to re-establish the Church of England. Because of the annulment of her parents’ marriage, Mary was declared illegitimate, and her title of princess was confiscated, leaving her to be “Lady Mary”. Her and Katherine were separated, and Mary was sent away from her home (Ashby). She was declared lady-in-waiting when Anne gave birth to her half-sister, Elizabeth, who would later become Queen Elizabeth I. Mary and Anne loathed each other. For Mary, the reason was Anne’s marriage to Henry, causing her and her mother to be declared illegitimate. Anne despised Mary because of her relevance to the throne; If Mary was illegitimate, then Elizabeth would be next in line to the throne, but it was the same the other way around. If Elizabeth were declared illegitimate, then she would not inherit the throne after Henry’s passing.
