Mark Watney, from The Martian, is exactly the character I would chose to be should I be given the choice. For months, he lived in my ideal situation: alone, inside, and eating potatoes. This will probably become my own lifestyle one day, so I appreciate the relatability. I also appreciate how incredibly smart Watney is. A botanist coming out alive from a place such as Mars is a feat to be had. In fact, anyone leaving Mars would have more than just a working brain. However, on a slightly more personal note, Watney has got a large dose of perseverance. Few people are willing to use their bodily fluids to survive for so long. Doug Swieteck, from “Okay for Now”, by Gary D. Schmidt, lived a life in anger. At the beginning of the book, he was very hateful of everything. He had spent a long time in anger and disgust, trying to find a way in life. Near the beginning of the book, Joe Pepitone gave Doug his baseball cap and jacket in person, to Doug. But, Doug’s mean older brother took the cap and his dad took his jacket. That added to Doug’s anger even more. But, luckily he turned it around in the middle and end of the book. He ended being a lot happier and was able to control his emotions better.
George Bailey: A magnificent individual. He gave a lot to his family members and others in his town. He gave up his adventurous dreams to fulfill, and help others, even the money he had saved up for his honeymoon so that others can lead a normal life until things settle down with the company. He’s very generous heart and puts others needs before him. He does everything possible to help others in any way he can. He is a very honorable man. He proves it by turning down Mr. Potter’s remunerative off to keep him and his family in good standing in the community.

The story is represented in the Novel, and a movie and these two platforms have some similarities and differences. The movie is the representation of what is happening in the book. In Pat Bishop, Matt Ingebretson, and Jake Weisman’s television show Corporate, Matt and Jake work for the evil corporation, Hampton Deville, as they attempt to survive the complexities and depression of life. The show’s satirically dark comedy and depressing but truthful outlook on life provide the audience with an interesting, yet introspective, viewing experience. In the opening of the third episode of Corporate, “The Pain of Being Alive”, Grace, one of the show’s main characters, gives a presentation about how working at Hampton Deville is detrimental towards the lifespan and health of the employees. These dark undertones of the show make the experience of watching Corporate more real as compared to other satirical situational comedy shows.
When my mom asked if I wanted to see this year’s Lakeside musical, I honestly was a bit unwilling. It’s not that I didn’t want to support my two or three friends up on stage and in the crew; I just don’t have a very good track record with high school performances. I’m a critic: I have always been very critical of myself, and very critical of others. I unwittingly judge the actors onstage, and end up feeling guilty because I probably could have done no better. On top of this warped superiority/inferiority was the nature of the musical they were performing; all throughout third grade I had been obsessed with the movie-musical Hairspray. I knew all the songs, most of the lines, and wasn’t sure if anyone could top Queen Latifah. But I was mistaken.
Before going to Alaska, Chris McCandless had failed to communicate with his family while on his journey; I believe this was Chris’s biggest mistake. Chris spent time with people in different parts of the nation while hitchhiking, most of them whom figured out that McCandless kept a part of him “hidden”. In chapter three, it was stated that Chris stayed with a man named Wayne Westerberg in South Dakota. Although Westerberg was not seen too often throughout the story, nevertheless he was an important character. Introducing himself as Alex, McCandless was in Westerberg’s company for quite some time: sometimes for a few days, other times for several weeks. Westerberg first realized the truth about Chris when he discovered his tax papers, which stated that “McCandless’s real name was Chris, not Alex.” Wayne further on claims that it was obvious that “something wasn’t right between him and his family” (Krakauer 18). Further in the book, Westerberg concluded with the fact that Chris had not spoken to his family “for all that time, treating them like dirt” (Krakauer 64). By surmounting the obstacles placed in front of him, how the hero responds shows his true nature and makes his reward that much more worthwhile. Mars is the ultimate enemy in this novel, and it does not care about Mark’s health or survival. It is therefore up to him to use his own ingenuity and training to figure out how to survive. Things for him start out rough: he wakes up, after being impaled by an antenna ray, to find out his crew has abandoned him on Mars. From here on out, Watney must decide how to grow a food source and make use of the resources leftover from the Ares 3 mission to last until the Ares 4 mission. Furthermore, he survives several explosions to the Hab, multiple grueling trips in the landrover, a giant duststorm, having the rover and attached trailer flipped over while going down an incline, and being launched into space. In a way, Watney essentially achieves immortality status. Being stuck on Mars should have meant automatic death, yet he manages to pull himself together, form a plan, and adapt whenever the plan fails and nearly kills him. This also reveals a lot about his character. With the occasional much-deserved griping, Watney meets every setback with sarcasm and the grim reality that he could die at any point before his rescue.
