Made in Abyss is an anime for adults. Though it may seem little more than an adventurous children's anime, chibi art and all, it gradually reveals itself as something much darker, as Riko's and Reg's hopeless ascent continues, stumbles along, no happy ending in sight, death -- and worse -- awaiting them for each step they fall. Many anime give off the facade of maturity: gratuitous gore, sadistic and loony villains, self-serving themes ripped from entry-level philosophers such as Nietzsche - features that make a story palatable to rebellious teenagers, rather than the adults they so desperately wish to be. Their friendship with one another is deeply heart-warming, as they have, much like real children, no ulterior motives, and genuinely enjoy their time together. They rely on one another, their abilities complimenting the other's: intellect and cooking in Riko's case, and combat and acrobatics in Reg's. The background music starts adventurous and gradually becomes more ominous as the story progresses, even if the ending theme remains almost hilariously light-hearted and incongruently so-- its lyrics being more appropriate to Barney & Friends than a graphic life-or-death struggle. While the artstyle may not be to everyone's taste, it at least remains detailed and consistent throughout the series (the map after the ending sequence being a nice addition), although there are perhaps two or three odd moments during the action sequences where the animation will suddenly become sketchy, for reasons that are mystery to
Blackrock written by Australian playwright Nick Enright is a dramatic play created to challenge a dominant social belief of twentieth century Australian youth. Blackrock, being inspired by the real-life rape and murder of schoolgirl Leigh Leigh (in Stockton, near Newcastle, Australia on 3 November 1989), provides powerful criticism of a society of dominant Australian male youth culture, and highlights how outwardly harmless attitudes and ideologies can lead to the death of a young women. Many aspects of Australian cultural identity are seen in this drama play, including emphasis on physical achievement opposed to mental, the concept of mateship, and the role of violence, each encourage the reader to question the overall moral justice, logic and wisdom of Australian society. Enright uses Blackrock as a representation of Australian society, and through his creation of such realistic characters enables the teenage audience the ease to identify with the themes and ideas. Enright suggest the flawed value of marginalisation of women, which in my opinion is the biggest issue in the play.
The documentary ‘Gasland” is a telling tale of the terrible consequences of natural gas mining in the US. The filmmaker, Josh Fox, travels around the country visiting different homes that are in very close proximity of natural gas drilling sites after receiving a $100,000 offer from a natural gas company to use his land as a drilling site . The film focuses on how the drilling sites not only leave ugly scars on the land, but also the horrendous health problems people get from drinking the contaminated groundwater.
There were many themes illustrated throughout the memoir, A Long Way Gone by Ishmael beah. These themes include survival/resilience despite great suffering, the loss of innocence, the importance of family/heritage, the power of hope and dreams, the effects of injustice on the individual, and the importance of social and political responsibility. Every theme listed has a great meaning, and the author puts them in there for the readers to analyze and take with them when they finish reading the book.
There are many ideas, experiences, values and beliefs in the play Blackrock by Nick Enright. The play is based on a true story and is set in late November to early January in an Industrial city and its beachside suburb of Blackrock. It is about a girl called Tracy aged 15 who was raped and murdered at a teenage party and the effects of it on the locals and community. Three main ideas explored in the play that challenged and confirmed my own beliefs include “Disrespect toward women”, “Victim blaming” and “Double standards”.
“The Trusty” is a work of fiction, written by Ron Rash, that tells the story of a man and a woman who try to escape their lives. In this short story, Sinkler is depicted as a scandalous but also as a distressed character. Many painted events lead to the illustration of a peculiar setting in which Sinkler is experiencing some abnormal instances. Sinkler is not dead, and his characterization has lead the audience to believe his flawed mental state is the reason why.
The Illegal, and Some Great Thing by Lawrence Hill both contain several important themes. To explain, The Illegal features the main character’s loss of innocence, and the racism towards people because of their country of origin, and ethnic background. Next, Some Great Thing includes the themes of racism and prejudice towards not only the protagonist, but also to French Canadians because of the colour of their skin, or the language they speak, and the courage of characters to stand up for what they believe is right.

In a family of five children, even a more conventional one, sometimes the youngest feels left out. But because of the Walls unconventional parenting, Maureen didn’t sometimes feel left out, she always felt left out. Since she was the youngest of the Walls children, she was fortunate enough not to have to move all the time but that might not have been the most beneficial thing for her. Throughout the novel the family lived in many different places, each more dangerous and disgusting than the last. However, I think for most readers Welch was the most upsetting place. The story “The Veldt” by Ray Bradbury is a science fiction short story that has themes connecting to what is happening now, and what will happen in the future. “The Veldt” was written in 1950, where notable technological advances were made. Things such as the first TV remote control and credit cards (although, known as the “travel and entertainment” card at the time) were made. 8 million televisions were also being used in homes around the US (The People History. Disney has done a great job interpreting these pieces of music. One example is the Chinese dance: they have created a flawless masterpiece in the mushroom animated Chinese dance. All the animations are doing something joyful whether it’s dancing, or making the flowers bloom, all the actions of the characters are sending out a vibrant spirit. Animations are vital to creating a mood/setting to the music. Another great thing Disney has done to create a good vibe in the animations is the characters they used like: fish, or flowers, all these animals emit a pleasant vibe as well as the up-beat music. The dances in the song are a mix of elegant dances and up-beat dances that blend together perfectly

In the story “Recitatif” author Toni Morrison, published in 1983, tells a story of two young girls, Twyla and Roberta, with two different ethnicities, who grow up in an orphanage together. Due to the fact that the story is narrated by Twyla, it seems natural for us the readers to associate with this touching story, as many of us have encounter racial discrimination back in the 1980s, making it clear that Morrison states the two girls grow up to always remember each based on the similarities and the childhood they both encounter together, come from different ethnic backgrounds, and as the story reveals, destiny is determined to bring the girls’ path together.
While they just enter the cave, it is violins plucking make that background music. I have to say this scene really scares me because I am very afraid of spiders and the music at here plays in synch-point when they find out there are spiders on their bodies. When Jones turns back, the audience finally sees the spiders and there is a sudden sound made by the percussion and then followed by scratching strings’ sound play in a fast tempo. This creates the tensions of seeing those huge spiders and how Jones will overcome this problem. The music is kind of exotic since it is out of the normal music that we will hear from the orchestra, and it captures the dangerous and adventure unpredictable feelings since they are at the cave of the rainforest. Another example is the scene that happens around (00:36:23), which is when Jones and Marion arrived at Cairo. The music is different from what it was before since there was some western orchestra music before this. It adds more local instrument in the underscoring music, and I feel like it maybe some kind of instruments that are similar to flute or piccolo. Also, I hear some traditional percussion’s sound as well. Back into the releasing time of this film, many people may not have a comprehensive understanding of music from those cultures, and the composer basically helps us be more focused on the storyline
Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West, by Gregory Maguire, takes place in the Land of Oz. It actually takes place forty years before The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, written by L. Frank Baum, and it tells the story of how Elphaba, the Wicked Witch of the West, became so wicked (Fiction Book Review). This book was written in 1995. Maguire wrote this book in the early 1900’s when he was living in London. At this time, the Gulf War was just starting. Maguire was intrigued by the headline in the British Newspaper, the Times of London, that said, “Sadaam Hussein: The New Hitler?” Months later, there was an incident where several young schoolboys kidnapped and killed a toddler. Instead of following a stereotypical animation guideline, which disassociates the audience from the visceral and the moral, Disney created a diverse portmanteau of entertainment and thought which represents many aspects of modern youth. The film’s ability to explore themes which heavily relate to today’s youth has ensured its popularity with the Box Office and younger audiences alike. The film privileges justice, as the perspective of revenge being destructive is driven constantly throughout. Consequently, Disney is shaping the future generations with positive morals and ethics.
