The development of lying is directly tied to the Theory of Mind. When you begin to understand that what you know about the world might be different from what another person knows, then you have gained the ability to lie. This usually happens at three years old.
Lying is a process that activates specific parts of the brain. Lying is also often accompanied by a feeling of guilt, which creates stress. Standard lie-detection techniques, like the polygraph, look for the body's reactions to stress, including elevated heart rate or blood pressure, faster breathing or sweating.
