Currently, the United States of America contain thousands of people who are battling with diseases every day. On a yearly basis, a family member does the unthinkable by putting a member of their family to rest. One disease that kills numerous people each year is lung cancer. To a majority of individuals, the thought of lung cancer is devastating while to others it causes confusion and a lack of understanding. Why? What is lung cancer? What causes lung cancer? These are common questions one faces after receiving a lung cancer prognosis. To fully interpret the two types of lung cancer, one needs to have an understanding of what cancer is. In science class most learn about biology and the fact that the human body consists of not only blood, bones, and organs, but also cells. It is these cells that cancer can form. Cancer develops when the cells develop abnormally forming tumors. Tumors appear in all areas of the human body. “The two types of lung cancer are small cell lung cancer, and non-small cell lung cancer” (Jones 1). In a recent article Jones explains both types of cancer and the inequality in growth rates. Jones states, “Small cell lung cancer is the least common only resulting in twelve percent of cases. Although it is less common, it is highly invasive” (1). One would presume that small cell lung cancer has a lower chance of recovery. Jones also states, “Non-small cell lung cancer is very common and is found in eighty-seven percent of cases, but has a lower growth rate” (1). For this reason, non-small cell lung cancer would escalate the chance of rehabilitation. The specific treatment required depends on the form of cancer, the health issues one might have in reaction to the treatment, and the progression of the illness. In a recent article, a doctor, and a registered nurse explain lung cancer and the types of treatments involved. The authors claim that, “There are four types of treatments used in the treatment of lung cancer, which include: chemotherapy, radiation therapy, targeted therapy and surgery” (Slatore and Lareau 2). Chemotherapy involves the use of medications to fight the disease, whereas radiation therapy is the use of radiation or rays that are used to diminish the size of tumors. Targeted therapy is also a contemporary treatment which involves medication that targets tumor growth, where surgery is used to remove tumors completely. However, although considered to be an acceptable treatment, it does tend to cause many unwanted side-effects.

Lung cancer makes the lives of its patients and the families. Lung cancer is one of the deadliest types of cancer and also one of the most common. Hundreds of thousands of people get diagnosed with lung cancer every year in just the United States. Also close to just as many people die from lung cancer in the US every year. I am going to talk about lung cancer and what it is, how to lower your risk of getting it, statistics of it, and the research and treatment of it.
Diagnosed with lung cancer, now what!? Time to do some research. Lung cancer is the number one cause of deaths in males and females. The causes, diagnosis, and treatment of lung cancer have advanced recently with new technology available to scientists and the medical profession. Lung cancer develops when the cells grow abnormally and tumors form instead of healthy lung tissue. It can take place in one or both lungs, normally the cells that line the air passages. Not all tumors are cancerous, the ones that do not spread are benign tumors. The more tumors that develop in the lungs will cause the lungs to work less efficiently. The metastatic tumors spread to other parts of the body passing through the blood stream or lymphatic system.
The working of the lungs is vital to the human physical structure. They provide the body with oxygen to keep the cells happy and help to maintain homeostasis. There are many carcinogens that cause cancer leading to the lungs not to doing their job. Sometimes the cancer spreads and causes metastases. The patient’s medical diagnosis is malignant neoplasm of the bronchus and lung brain metastases.

Non-small-cell lung cancer is more common than small-cell lung cancer. It makes up about 80 percent of all diagnosed lung cancers. It is actually four different kinds of lung cancers that grow and respond to treatment in about the same way. These four types of non-small-cell lung cancer are termed squamous cell, adencarcinoma, large cell, and mixed cell. Two other related cancers that are also included in the non-small-cell lung cancers group are carcinoid and mesothelioma. Non-small-cell lung cancer grows more slowly than small-cell lung cancer. Non-small-cell lung cancer tends to grow first in the area where it started then invades the surrounding lung tissue and ribs. It eventually spreads to other areas of the body, mainly bones, brain, and liver.
Isn’t it overwhelming to consider the fact that approximately one in eight deaths in the world are due to cancer? To make this more comprehensible, the number of deaths caused by cancer is greater than caused by AIDS, tuberculosis, and malaria combined. Along with the idea that this disease does not have a definite cure is a mind-staggering concept to grasp. If not caught in time, cancer means guaranteed death. These types of thoughts were floating around my head when my mother had told me that my father had mouth cancer.

The leading cause of death in America is lung cancer. Lung cancer is ranked top 10 fatal cancers in the United States. There are many types of ways to get lung cancer. There is radon gas it occurs outdoors naturally. Then there is second hand smoke that comes from other people smoking. People are even getting lung cancer from cancer causing agents, this happens from carcinogens. You can also get it from air pollution indoors and outdoors. Also there are gene-mutations that form cancer causing cells. Then there is the one everyone blamed lung cancer is smoking.
Cancer patients often wonder if going through treatments like chemotherapy and radiation are worth the risk of the side effects, in addition to the cancerous side effects. They feel that they can’t enjoy or relax in what a short amount of time they have left because they are bedridden from the nausea and pain that treatments put them through. Patients tell their loved ones to just let them die so long as they don’t have to go through any more pain. Those who are too old, are unable to recover from the effects, or are just too far in the grips of cancer, should refuse the more harsh treatments like chemo and radiation. On the positive side, refusing treatments after a certain point can save their families from the stress and cost of hospital bills. If caught early enough, patients can opt for safer and easier routes to getting rid of cancer like surgery or by doing a stem cell transplant.
Cancer is defined as where the abnormal cells are divided without any control and they are able to invade into tissues. At times cancer can be cured right away once it is detected through treatments that the doctor recommends, but at times cancer cannot be cured based on what stage the cancer is at.
