When considering information about Jesus, it is important to consider whether that information has been gathered from above or below. Broken down, the concept of differentiating between “Christology from above” and “Christology from below” essentially means whether or not you examine Jesus as a Godly figure or a humanly figure. The high-descending approach examines Jesus from the holy lens in the sense that “…the Word of God descends from heaven and becomes flesh, is glorified in death, and returns to the Father in heaven,” (McMahon XV) whereas the low-ascending approach demonstrates how Jesus was actually a human. This is critical for many reasons. First, historical evidence suggests that there were several people regarded as miracle workers and Messiahs back in the time in which Jesus lived, so examining Him from a historical perspective can shed some light whether or not people like Jesus were a common occurrence and why Jesus himself was so special. Secondly, looking at Jesus Christ from a historical, low-ascending approach could shed light on what made Jesus say the things He said and do the things He did despite the dangers that stemmed from his actions. Finally, the low-ascending approach would allow Christianity to undergo a serious reform. Due to the high-ascending approach, many people may misunderstand Jesus and God, and may not act in a manner that someone of good faith would. By humbling ourselves and looking at Jesus in a different light, it is possible to restore the Christian faith to a more genuine state of worshipping and believing.
In conclusion, it is important to consider Christology from above and below in order to get the full Christian experience, however—in terms of getting to know Jesus as a person—the low-ascending approach is the most effective strategy. Everywhere He went, He proclaimed the Kingdom of God, exalted God’s glory and performed miracles. Considering that He was a Jewish man in a Jewish community, many of the people who witnessed His miracles were Jewish. As a result His actions, He grew to be known as Messiah amongst the people. In order to understand this term, one must examine the historical context of the term and what the Jews were going through. The Jews went through multiple periods of devastation and oppression and were looking for a person to deliver them from their hardships. This cycle caused beliefs in varies forms of eschatology to develop, in which through some grand event and by the deliverance of a Godly figure, the world would shift drastically and God’s kingdom would reign. A messiah is a rather ambiguous term. It mainly means an anointed one; usually a messiah is considered to be a son of David and would reestablish Israel to what it once was. Because messiahs are anointed ones they would typically be Jewish priests, prophets and kings. However, a Messiah can also be a warrior, or a man of peace. It is often perceived that messiah would have the same meaning, but the word messiah has a huge complexity to it, due to the many beliefs about who is the messiah, that many scholars have a difficult time trying to form a definition. For this essay, messiah will be defined as a person that believes he has been appointed by god to redeem Israel and has an eschatological concept. Jesus, a name known by billions throughout the world. To each, this name means something different; savior, friend, philosopher, prophet, teacher, fraud, fake, liar. Some even believe that He is just an imaginary character from the minds of those who wrote about Him. The Westminster Dictionary of Theology describes apologetics as, "Defense, by argument, of Christian belief against external criticism or against other worldly views" (Apologetics 31-32). Though there are still many mysteries that surround the ongoing debate about Christianity, evidence can now prove some of what Christians took by faith before. Matthew characterizes Jesus as the prophesized Messiah that has finally arrived. Every time a significant event, Matthew highlights that these events fulfill a certain specific prophecy. One example is the revelation that the power of the Holy Spirit caused the Virgin Mary to conceive. Matthew 1:22-23 says, “All this took place to fulfill what the Lord had spoken by the prophet: “Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a son, and they shall call his name Immanuel.” Later on, Matthew 2:18 quotes a prophecy in Jeremiah that foretold the Herod’s actions, and Matthew again quotes another prophecy in Matthew 2:15 where “the Lord had spoken by the prophet, ‘out of Egypt I called my son.’” This was when Joseph, Mary, and Jesus had fled to Egypt to avoid the wrath of Herod. Other important details that fulfilled prophecies are Joseph’s lineage of the House of David and Jesus’ childhood in Nazareth (which makes him a Nazarene). (Matt. 2:23) The very end picture that Matthew intends to portray is that Jesus fulfills so many specific prophecies in the Old Testament, that surely, without a doubt, Jesus was the Messiah the Jews were waiting
When Jesus visited Jerusalem around 29 AD, he found enthusiastic crowds greeting him as the messiah. However he was arrested for not worshiping pagan Roman gods and was sentenced to death on a cross. While he was hanging awaiting death he forgave those who had killed him and those who had worshipped him the day before were denying him.
