Patriote or Traitor? Louis Riel was born in 1844. He was captured and executed by Canadian authorities in November 16, 1885. He was a leader who gave up his life and time to fight for the right of the Metis, Indians and the western settlers. He was an well-educated young man fluent in both French and English. He was also selected as the Metis’s spokesman to negotiate with the Canadian government. During the 1869-70, he led the rebel when Canada purchases Manitoba from the Hudson’s bay company. Also, he organized and led a similar rebellion in 1885. Above all, is he a patriote or a traitor? It was inappropriate to accuse Riel as a traitor. He tried to defend the traditional rights of Metis and made sure they treated as equally as the British subjects. Riel was a patriote, who passionately love, supported and defended his people. He was also a serious and thoughtful person who dedicated his life to help others. Metis, Native Indians and western setters were all very proud of and respected this leader because of his life long effort. He was a person who was willing to step up and told the government what they needed. Riel never wanted any violent, in fact, he wanted to use peaceful methods to achieve the changes they desired. He has left us questioning whether or whether not his movements were plausible, but then again, he has nevertheless managed to carry honor and pride, while contributing many things towards Canada through his objectives. He preserved the Métis home territory and rights through many obstacles, which gradually led to the formation of Manitoba. He went through plenty of danger, while he knew they were coming. Louis Riel’s noble actions are too worthy to be burdened with charges of high treason and felony. “No matter what happens now,” he stated, “the rights of the Métis are assured by the Manitoba Act; that is what I wanted. One of the messages is “loyalty to your friends.” Forest’s honorable loyalty is to his friends Lieutenant Dan and Benjamin Blue “Bubba.” Forrest met his friend “Bubba” while serving in Vietnam, his loyalty to Bubba was so intense that, despite being in the thick of a war zone, Forrest would not stop until he was able to pull Bubba out of the wreckage. Forest went back time after time rescuing soldiers until he found “Bubba” who was wounded badly. After Bubba’s death, Forrest kept his promise and started a shrimping business after its success he financially assisting Bubba’s family. Unlike “Bubba” Lt. Dan finds himself hating Forrest for saving his life while in Vietnam. Despite Dan’s poor attitude towards Forrest, Forrest stayed by his side during his darkest times and throughout the holidays in New York City. Eventually, Forrest’s dedication was returned, when Lt. Dan stepped up to help him with his shrimping business, and when he arrived at Forrest’s intimate wedding back home in Alabama. We can apply this to our own lives by sticking with those we care about, even when they refuse to care about themselves.
