When the football season came to an end. His life was going downhill. He quit the football season mid-season causing him not able to play basketball. Then his girlfriend Becky died trying to ditch a motorcycle and then went off of the bridge into the water. The Grief was to much for Louie and he blew up at her funeral and just broke down.
Coach Madison got involved. He helped Louie calm his emotions by telling him that he didn't want to be involved on a team when there was racism. That he was a coach, but he didn't want to coach a team that is racist. They came up with a plan with to let Louie compete in track. Louie and Madison went up against Principle Jasper and Coach Lednecky and convinced them to let Louie run track.
Louie did not have the best senior year. He experienced sadness, guilt and death. In the last track meet, Louie had to compete against Washington. Washington remarked that it was an honor for him to be competing against Louie and that he was a true role model. Louie won, but just by a little; he was still proud of himself. In addition, Willie received no help from his two sons, and even lost his job. Willie’s constant hardship in maintaining his home caused him to end his life. On the other hand, Troy did not have it as difficult as Willie did. Troy received help in paying for his home, and unlike Willie, Troy received a promotion that further made him more financially successful. The relationship between father and son could be difficult. The struggles that both Willy and Troy experienced is what caused them to have expectations. Undoubtedly, Willie had to endure more hardships because of the lack of help.
After days of being beating they are both shipped off to separate camps. This is where Louie encounters a guard nicked named “The Bird” he instantly began tormenting Louie, trying to break him. They made him run races even though he was emaciated and weak and at one point had fallen to the ground. A fellow POW commented that he should just stay down. Louie drug himself onto his feet and completed the race where he was relentlessly beaten for not giving up. He was made to be punched by fellow soldiers, kicked around by guards but through it all he never gave up. He kept his faith and said that if God got him through this that he would devote his life to serving him. Towards the end of the movie he is made to hold a board over his head and if he dropped it he were to be shot. Just when he was close to dropping the board his friends began to cheer him on which made him raise the board completely over his head again. The Bird was embarrassed by Louie and began to beat him. Louie’s overpowering trait of determination glows in both the movie and book, “A lifetime of glory is worth a moment of pain” (Unbroken 34). The dignifying thought shows the readers and viewers that Louie is a fighter, he is willing to toughen up through the difficult times and refuses to give up due to undesirable circumstances. Louie builds his character by reaching out to the readers and viewers to inspire. In both the movie and book, Mac represents the darker side of emotions to the audience of Unbroken, “The men grew thinner. Phil was gradually regaining his strength after his initial state of concussed exhaustion; Mac’s body grew weaker, following his broken spirit” (Unbroken 149). Unlike Louie, Mac is full of weakness and hopelessness. Mac’s character appeals to a different side of emotions of the readers and viewers. Rather than inspiration and motivation, Mac brings out the sorrow. While the novel focuses on the events that make up Louie, the film solely directs attention to how war molds him. The section written of Louie’s childhood and Olympic career connect the readers to the character significantly.
