Loss of Innocence Personal Response Tennyson’s poem, Ulysses, is about a man who changed from his experience at sea, and was never the same when he returned to his home, Ithaca. Likewise, I have changed from my experiences in a society that is very different from my own. Gender discrimination is a major social problem that exists all over the world, especially in third world countries. It is very common for girls to be strangled, abused, and mistreated in India. Orphanages provide these girls with a shelter, an education, good health, food, and clothes. My trip to India left me in complete shock, as I realized just how blessed I truly am. After travelling to the ‘Unique Home for Girls,’ an orphanage in India, I learned to be more grateful for everything in my life. Most girls are left abandoned …show more content…

After travelling for years, coming across various mythical creatures, and being tormented by the gods, Ulysses managed to escape. This journey involved the contact of people from a whole different society, and Ulysses gained a new, unique sort of knowledge from it. Ulysses actually evolves into a different person from his new understanding of the world. Similarly, my visit to the ‘Unique Home for Girls’ led to a change in perspective of my life. Every thought and action that I make now, is due to my encounter of the girls in the orphanage. I have acquired a new knowledge of the world, and this has taught me to be grateful for everything I have. Living in a first world country and having a family that cares for me is enough. In addition to this, Ulysses felt that he would never be the same, and would like to go back to the adventures he came from. In the same way, I felt that my new judgment of things had changed me so much, that it would be hard to deal with
