I chose Jack as the most powerful character because most of the kids follow him and listen to his order. After every hunt, Jack and his group tend to pick on the smallest kid, Jack forced the kid to pretend like he’s a pig and then Jack started to poke him with a spear, this is an example of him showing how powerful he is using physical violence. Jack is also known for using intimidation when Bill asked him, “what will we use to light the fire”, he responded, “we shall take fire from the other” (page 161). The Lord of the Flies is a gruesome story about young boys stranded on an island, who underwent a transformation from polite British choir boys to savage hooligans. One of the main difficulties the boys face during their adventures upon the island, is their method of government, they either follow the path of Ralph, the democratic leader whose main focus is to escape the despairing island; or Jack a power-hungry monarchical leader who won't ever take no for an answer. The two boys are constantly bickering and arguing over who deserves the leader-position. We all understand Ralph wants to be leader so that he can ensure that the boys will return back home, but in Jack's case, it is a constant mystery to us about why he wants power over the other children. But we do get much small hints from the author, William Golding, that Jack's biggest fear among the other children on the island is public humiliation. This becomes more and more evident the farther on into the book, and his fear seems to be what persuades him to reach for a powerful position.
Lord of the Flies, written by William Golding, has four very important dynamic characters. A dynamic character is a character that develops and grows during the course of the story. Ralph, Jack, Piggy, and Simon are four dynamic characters in Lord of the Flies that adapt to their new lifestyles in different ways. Jack is a very important dynamic character in Lord of the Flies because he goes through the most changes during the novel. While on the island, Jack has many life experiences that change him forever. Jack never thought he would live his life the way he is living his life in the island. Jack’s authoritative figure, savage-like/instinctual behavior, and violence are three qualities that make Jack a dynamic character.
A plane abruptly crashes into an abandoned island, risking the passengers in the plane. Luckily, the boys in the plane survive this devastating event. These boys, isolated from the supervision of adults, cooperate for rescue. A particular boy, encouraged that he can lead the boys successfully, instructs the others. Unfortunately, this responsible boy disguises himself with a mask, which brings a major transformation. For this boy, Jack, a major character in William Golding’s novel Lord of the Flies, his desire for power is greater than his hope for rescue. By Jack putting on the mask, Golding displays a responsible British boy, who focuses on survival, transform to an irresponsible, aggressive human being who is consumed by violence.
First and foremost, characters in the novel The Lord of the Flies begin to Come of Age when they learn to cope with change. During World War II, the children are flown to surrounding countries to attend boarding school, in order to be safe from the war. In the process, the pilot loses control of the plane and the plane crashes. All of the adults on the plane die and the children must learn to fend for themselves; however, some minors did not maintain their humanity and they start to imagine the beast. Even though they are the most vicious boys in the book they are also very well liked and are in sort of a higher class/ ranking than the other boys. When talking about how to reenact the hunting scene of the pig Jack says something deep down disgusting “Or someone to pretend- Use a littlun said Jack, and everybody laughed.” (Golding 115). Jack always disliked the little’uns and in the book it seems as if the reason was because they just simply didn’t do enough. He and his choir boys/ hunters always think that since they complete the task of providing lots of meat they are higher up than the other boys. They do help with feeding the group but also show disrespect and disregard for the little’uns. Many people who may be more respected and even higher up in the working class look down upon others and act as if they are better than them because they are more privileged or successful. When deciding basic jobs ralph suggests "Jack's in charge of the choir. They can be—what do you want them be?" "Hunters."(Golding 23). Jack has the ambition and drive for what he wants as a leader but lacks the selfless aspect and a regard for others. In the book he is always shown as the leader of the hunters, the chief or the head choir boy. On the dystopian island of Lord of the Flies, authored by William Golding, one can observe the boy's’ descent into madness. When a group of young children were abandoned on an island without adult supervision, chaos rampaged. This loss civility is most clearly demonstrated by Jack and his effect on others. The text illustrates how quickly he succumbed to the savagery, the way his thirst for power and his dire situation brought him to barbarity, and how the boys followed suit, losing all their humanity.
In Golding's Lord of the Flies, he utilizes the environment of the island to affect Jack's state of mind. Jack is used to order and authority, but when he is stuck on the island, all reason is discarded. The island gives Jack the freedom to release his inner desires and change from the obedient boy he used to be to a blood thirsty hunter.
The fact that Jack acts like this is very important to the story. Jack’s lust for power and blood sped the story up a lot faster. It’s possible that without Jack the boys wouldn’t even become savage. Jack is also a bully, and forces the boys out of fear into what he wants them to do. In, “The Lord of the Flies”, by William Golding, Jack is pretty much equivalent to a middle school bully, but the circumstances he is in, turns him into something even worse.
There is a fine line between good and evil, and change, in many ways can be for the worse. In William Golding’s Lord of the Flies, the community of schoolboys who crash onto an unknown island change according to the wilderness and the influential Jack. Against the will of their civilized and elected Chief Ralph, Jack undermines the growing infrastructure of the group by giving rise to fun and chaos, gaining dominance. Jack ruled with, what we call today, an “Iron Fist”. Golding shows this by telling how Jack ruled, how he’d beat those who didn’t obey him and how he was violent, greedy, and self-absorbed.
