1) The major concepts regarding technology and social media in my Social Media Today class make up the information I will be storing in long-term memory. These concepts or areas of study include: participatory culture, speech and censorship, privacy and identity, community in networks, and producing/consuming news and information. Memory is an important component in learning so in order to do well in the course and on exams I need to incorporate this material into my long-term memory. Additionally, the key concepts I am currently learning in Social Media today will effect how I view and use technology, more specifically social media throughout the rest of my life. Therefore, remembering these concepts will help how I utilize technology in the long run, which is important if I plan on double majoring in journalism with an interest in public relations. Short-term memory then retains this information for limited times, this stage occurs immediately after information enters sensory memory. Lastly, if one desires to remember this information it can enter long-term memory. Moreover, the social media concepts described earlier will be stored in my long-term memory by entering the sensory memory first. As I listen and take notes in class I am encoding this information into my sensory memory by seeing and hearing the content, which is then immediately transitioned into my short-term memory. At this stage, the information temporarily stays until it is rehearsed enough to be passed onto my long-term memory. Two techniques for improving the encoding process of this information into my long-term memory could be, distributed practice and accurately retrieving the information periodically.
