During the course of The Family Romanov by Candace Fleming, Fleming using elements of fiction that are woven into the narrative nonfiction story. Although the story of the Family Romanov is true, the author added small elements of fiction to make the story more engaging and better. The main elements of fiction in “The Family Romanov” is expressed through dialogue and descriptions of objects.

In The Family Romanov, the author used elements of fiction to enhance the story. The reader can pick out the fiction because the author will add in the dialogue of exactly what characters in a random point in their lives. In time, the only way that the conversation would have been documented word for word would be if someone was constantly writing down everything that each character said. Candace Fleming described the various thing in so much detail that it led you to think that it was somewhat fiction. “Alexandra was wearing a gold brocade gown shimmering with the thousands of diamonds and pearls that had been sewn onto it … Her elaborate headdress glittered with diamonds and emeralds, and her pearl earrings were so heavy it was hard for her to hold up her head” (4). This quote from the beginning of the book during one of the many balls that the royal family hosted and what Alexandra happened to be wearing on that particular night. At first, the description of the dress sounded reasonable, but once it started to say how she could hold her head up from the weight of the earrings, it sounds more like fiction. I find it very hard to believe that the author knew exactly that she couldn't hold her head up because of the weight of the earrings. Thought this is a narrative nonfiction book and it is true, Candace Fleming used elements of fiction in her book The Family
