Literacy coaching is an integral part of teacher development and overall improved instruction. Although, I have never worked with a literacy coach, I have been inspired by other teachers to enter the profession and continue my education and professional improvement. Together these teachers exemplified the five qualities of a literacy coach.
These teachers demonstrated their dedication to their students through their extensive planning and preparation for class. It was clear that these teachers had a well thought out plan and clear organization for the class’ progress. These routines were maintained to make the most productive use for time. Especially in English, were there are so many topics to cover including literature, non-fiction, grammar, writing, and vocab. My favorite English teacher scheduled our lessons to include all of these elements in a manageable and uniformed way so that students new what to expect of class each day and what was expected of them.
The other most influential teacher I encountered was wonderful at creating a collaborative environment for her students. She often worked with other teachers to bring together different classes for exposure to different subject matter that related to our studies. After graduating and returning to teach with this amazing woman as my mentor, I learned how often she participated in collaboration with her peers. She was a member of many committees and worked with others for the benefit her students.
She also promoted reflection as my mentor during my first year of teaching. She always encouraged me to think reflectively about my teaching practices and the outcomes of each class. She modeled for me her reflective thinking process and would suggest ways to improve upon my teaching techniques and instructional methods. She was a wonderful resource to use in planning lessons based on these
