Throughout the novel, The Great Gatsby, F. Scott Fitzgerald creates characters that have achieved or seem to be in the process of reaching the American dream. He shows how they have fallen into an indulgent and blasé lifestyle which leaves them looking for even more material possessions in order to make them happy. In "Possessions in The Great Gatsby" Scott Donaldson discusses how all of Fitzgerald's characters are motivated by possessions because of his personal views of wealthy lifestyles.
