In the novel, Life of Pi, one of the most significant way allegories are revealed in the story is Martel’s use of various animals to symbolize the key role and theme contributing to Pi’s spiritual journey. The descriptions of these non-human characters are strategically vivid making the story more compelling to help readers understand, sympathize with, and connect emotionally with the animals. Towards the end of the book, the two Japanese reporters who interviewed Pi did not believe his first version of the story and request for the truth. Thus, Pi has to reveal another version of the story by saying: “You want a story that won’t surprise you. That will confirm what you already know. These animal representations allow readers to have more pleasure reading the book with a less threatening setting rather than to read about human cruelty during Pi’s 227 days at sea. Most importantly, one of the ultimate survivors, the tiger, is not only used to symbolize part of Pi’s personality, but also portrays courage, hope and faith. In the end, Pi’s relationship with the tiger changed from fear to faith as he sees himself transforming into the tiger who courageously exhibits the same determination to survive. This faith instigates the chapter of his true spiritual journey. Nevertheless, in this trial period Martel induces a suspense between truth and fiction that brings about a tension of allegories alarming the reader’s mind wondering which survival story is the true one.
