Leukemia is a type of cancer that affects the white blood cells. The cancer starts in the bone marrow, the marrow begins to produce abnormal cells that do not function normally. These cells grow faster and do not stop growing when they should. The white blood cells are supposed to kill diseases and viruses in the blood, but when affected by the cancer, kill good blood cells and spread to lymph nodes. When the good blood cells died conditions such as anemia, infection, and bleeding occur along with swelling and pain of the lymph nodes. There are many types of leukemia some occur mostly in children, while others occur mostly in adults.
Symptoms or signs that a person should see a doctor are reoccurring fevers, night sweats, nosebleeds, unexplained weight loss, bone pain, and loss of appetite. Also, symptoms like bruising easily and red spots on the skin could be early signs of leukemia. The cause of leukemia is yet to be found, but people who have had previous cancer treatment, genetic disorders, excessive exposure to the chemical benzene, or a family history of leukemia are at a higher risk of getting it.

Blood tests can show abnormal numbers of white or red blood cells, but physical exams and bone marrow tests can also be used. A physical exam could show an enlarged liver or spleen, lymph node swelling , or anemia. Most of the time a doctor will take a blood test and if it comes back abnormally they would take a bone marrow from the person's hip bone and look for leukemia
On Sunday, a nurse on a medical/surgical floor in a large private hospital is assigned as the primary nurse to a woman who was just admitted. The woman’s testing begins on Monday and the primary nurse does not have work for the next few days. The nurse returns on Saturday and goes over the woman’s charts. The nurse discovers that the woman has chronic lymphocytic leukemia and is being treated for the disease. After approaching the woman the nurse realizes that the woman is unaware of her diagnoses as she asks the nurse when she will be able to return to work. The nurse explains that she has not yet spoken with the physician and will get back to her once she has done so. On your way back to the nurses' station, one of the woman's two daughters approaches the nurse and urges the nurse to assure her mother that there is no reason for concern. The daughter explains that her mother has just been through a painful divorce and

I have chosen to write about the constellation Cancer (The Crab). I chose Cancer because it is one of only a handful of constellations that I am actually able to identify in the night sky. Cancer is one of the twelve Zodiac constellations; people whose birthdays fall between June 21st and July 22nd have Cancer as their sign. Cancer is the Latin word for crab, and despite the fact that the constellation looks more like a lobster then a crab, it is still referred to as a crab. The constellation is visible from the northern hemisphere from late winter to early spring.
I have elected to transcribe my proposal argument on issues regarding cancer chemoprevention. I selected this topic because reasonably minute devotion has been given to cancer chemoprevention research in ethical writings, particularly in relation to the huge quantity of moral studies in cancer treatment exploration. Cancer chemoprevention trials test the ability and care of medicinal agents in averting cancer before its manifestation. I believe that phase III chemoprevention issues can be less prevalent by simply ensuring enhanced communication and etiquette between researchers and investigators.
When speaking with the public health representative from LLS, Ms. Harry inquired the biggest challenge the organization faces is screening. For blood cancer patients it is very hard for screening to be done. There is no test out there for the screening of blood itself. In medical screening, there is MRI, EKG, CT Scans, etc. These different types of screenings are measured around the muscular and skeletal systems. Medical screenings check within the body, but does not test the liquid blood in any way. If Leukemia and Lymphoma Society is able to receive blood screening, the researchers may be able to find the direct link within the genetics of the different types of blood cancers in a patient.
A complete blood count is a common blood test that’s done for a variety of reasons. Some of those reasons include to review your overall health, to diagnose a medical condition, to monitor a medical condition, and to monitor medical treatment. If the complete blood count test reveals an abnormal increase
Over one million Americans in the United States are living with or have been diagnosed with leukemia. That’s a big amount of people. I chose to do my research paper on leukemia because two years ago I lost my grandma to the cancer. I wanted to know more about the disease and what was happening to her. I researched the different types, risk factors, symptoms, treatment, and what kind of research is being done to help cure leukemia. Leukemia is a cancer of the blood cells that start in the bone marrow. During leukemia the bone marrow starts to make a lot of abnormal white blood cells or “leukemia cells”.
“The word 'leukemia' is a very frightening word. In many instances, it's a killer and it's something that you have to deal with in a very serious and determined way if you're going to beat it” - Kareem Abdul-Jabbar. Many people, including tons of children, fight leukemia every day trying to beat this vicious cancer. Without knowing how leukemia is exactly caused, it puts a damper on how to avoid it.
For example if the liver is damaged or diseased then some of its enzymes will leak into the bloodstream. A blood test will check for this and give the doctor an idea as to what has happened.
Leukemia is a cancer of the white blood cells. It begins in the bone marrow, the soft tissue inside the bones. Within the bone marrow is where white blood cells are created, that help fight off bacteria, viruses, and other microorganisms within the body that cause infections. The disease develops to when the white blood cells are being produced out of control. The cells that are being produced do not work properly as they should, they grow faster than a normal cell would and don’t know when to stop growing. Overtime, if not treated properly, the white blood cells will over crowd blood cells, creating a serious problem such as anemia, bleeding and infection. Leukemia cells can spread to the lymph nodes and other organs in the body causing swelling and pain.
The emphasis on health and fitness has become paramount in our society today in an effort to prevent and combat diseases such as Cancers. Cancers are a group of over 100 diseases that affects every aspect of the human system from skin, to bones, to muscles, to blood. One of the most common blood disorders is Leukemia. As defined by the U.S. National Library of Medicine, Leukemia is a type of blood cancer that begins in the bone marrow. The bone marrow is the soft tissue in the center of the bone that is responsible for the production of blood cells. The term leukemia means white blood. The term leukocytes refer to white blood cells, which are body’s defense against infections and other foreign substances. When Leukemia occurs there is an uncontrolled increase in the number of white blood cells. When this occurs, these cancerous cells inhibit the production of healthy red blood cells, platelets, and mature white blood cells. Over time the cancerous cells can spread to the bloodstream and lymph nodes. They can also travel to the Central Nervous System and the rest of the body.
Chronic Myeloid leukemia (CML) is a blood and bone marrow disease that slowly progresses. The disease usually occurs in middle aged or older individuals and rarely occurs in children. In CML, an unusually high number of blood stem cells become granulocytes. These granulocytes, also called leukemia cells are irregular in shape and do not develop into healthy white blood cells. Eventually, they concentrate in the blood leaving no room for healthy cells which may lead to infection, anemia, or bleeding. The typical signs of CML include fatigue, fever, night sweats, and weight loss (6).
The patient has experienced fever, chills on body, headaches and anorexia as well as sweating especially during the night. The patient has also been feeling fatigued, muscle aches and nausea as well as vomiting especially after eating (WHO, 2010, p. 117). These symptoms started forty eight hours ago, and the patient has not taken any medication except for some aspirin.
Today, there are more advanced lab tests to help doctors classify ALL so they no longer have to rely on just the cell’s characteristics. These new lab tests aid in the grouping of ALL based on the type of lymphocyte the leukemia stems from (B cell or T cell) and how mature the cancer cells are (American Cancer Society, 2013)54.... ... middle of paper ... ... They test many types of samples in the lab such as skin or body fluids like blood and urine. Lab techs have the responsibility to not only perform the test but to record the results and get the results where they need to be. Blood tests can indicate many different conditions such as a hormone imbalance or blood type. This is very important because if someone receives a blood type that is not compatible with their own blood, the patient could die. Skin and tissue samples can also lead to a diagnosis. They can run tests to see if a sample reacts to something or doesn’t react to something. This is how the lab tech helps to diagnose.
