Why do we need commas, apostrophes, hyphens, quotation marks, and parentheses? Since we can't use or voice to write our expression, you have to use punctuation. Commas have an important purpose in writing. Without commas, readers would be unable to understand the writer's ideas accurately. It also avoids confusion, commas help as signals that give an understanding of sentences. If words are listed in a line, it needs commas. Example: He drew a picture with a pen holder, light bulb, deck lamp, and table. It would also be bad if you were writing and said: " Let's eat Grandma!" The use of parentheses indicates that the writer viewed the information less important or the afterthought. Every time you use parentheses (always used in pairs) allow a writer to provide additional information. Just read your sentence without the parenthetical content. If it makes sense, the parentheses are acceptable; if it doesn’t, the punctuation must be reconstructed. Example: Correct: The president (and his assistant) traveled by private jet.
