Leonardo da Vinci was known as one of the greatest painters ever along with being a painter, he had many other skills and traits that made him unique. Leonardo excelled in almost all the fields of arts and science: in physics, mechanics engineering, mathematics, geometry, in anatomy, geology, botany and geography, in music, architecture, sculpture, and last but not least painting (Hohenstatt 6).He was born in Vinci near Florence Italy born on April 14, 1452. He grew up in the Renaissance Period a time where many people became more interested in the arts. He was the illegitimate son of Ser Pireo Frusiono di Antonito, a Florentine notary and a peasant girl Catarina (Herbert 1). For a time over twenty years Leonardo was the only child but by the time of his death, he had seventeen half-siblings (Douglas 2-3). Leonardo’s Leonardo began painting the last between 1494 and 1495, however it was not completed until 1498 (Kindersley 58). The last supper is one of the most studied and famous and painting in the world (karystek). The painting represents the scene of The Last Supper of Jesus with his disciples, as it is told in the Gospel of John, 13:21. Leonardo has depicted the consternation that occurred among the Twelve Disciples when Jesus announced that one of them would betray him. (Pomilil 116) .This famous painting also picks out that one of Jesus’s followers was actually a woman (karystek). Many believe that it was the young John without a beard, but in fact it was Mary Magdalene. She was in fact Jesus’s wife that his disciples tried to hide from knowing the truth about her. Leonardo da Vinci was a man of art, science and innovation during the Renaissance Era. Although many of Leonardo’s paintings were unfinished or lost, we could see his influence in perspective, light and shadows, and primary colors in his paintings. To paint more realistic paintings, he first learned as an apprentice to Andrea del Verrocchio, a leading Florentine painter and sculptor. After 6 years he became an independent master and developed his own style of painting.

Since his mother did not marry his father, he could not inherit his father’s land, nor did he have much going for him as a wealthy businessman. When people think of Leonardo da Vinci, they mostly associate him with art and paintings, such as his famous Mona Lisa and The Last Supper. Leonardo believed that art was correlated to science and nature. He was born from a peasant woman named Caterina and fathered by a lawyer with the name of Ser Piero Da Vinci. His parents were not married (Macdonald 5). When Leonardo was a one year old his mother left him with his father for some other man. His father wanted him to be successful, so at the age of fourteen his father sent him to become an apprentice of a famous artist in Florence, Italy called Andrea Del Verrocchio (Macdonald 5). His apprenticeship lasted twelve years (Kalz 23), in which time Verrocchio inspired and encouraged Leonardo to be a free-thinker (Reed 28). Before his apprenticeship Leonardo had little formal education (Reed 9). After his apprenticeship under Andrea Del Verrocchio he began to work under Lorenzo de’ Medici (Kalz 23). In 1482, at the age of thirty, Leonardo moved to Milan and gained favor of the duke of Milan, Ludovico Sforza due to his singing voice and talent on the flute (Kalz 23). Leonardo was born April 15, 1452 he was the son of Ser Piero and Caterina. Leonardo's father was a landlord, and his mother was a peasant and they both were not married at the time. Leonardo lived with his father and had an education. Later on his father moved the family to Florence( Heydenreich). At the age of 15 Leonardo was showing that he was a great painter. In 1467 he became an apprentist to Andrea Del Verrochio a very well known artist during that time period. He became a member of Verrochio's workshop where he received an education in a huge variety of areas.(Giorgio). In another workshop of Antonio Pollaiuolo, Leonardo studied anatomy, and animals. He was accepted into painters guild in Florence. The Painting Martha and Mary Magdalene is one of the many masterpieces in the DIA’s collection in Detroit. Although there is much more to understanding a work of art then just looking at it. In order to understand a piece, you have to understand the Artist, the time period, and the symbols in that painting that may have very different meaning today.

Leonardo da Vinci used flawless subject matter, form, content, and iconography to create his painting The Last Supper. Leonardo da Vinci painted his interpretation of what the Last Supper looked like through his work of art. In the center of his painting he painted Jesus Christ, the son of God, in the middle of all of his disciples. On each side of him there are an even number of six disciples sitting at a table pointing to themselves and to each other. Da Vinci painted this scene inside of a dark room with three windows, eight doors, and a beautiful outside environment. In order to paint this scene da Vinci used flawless form.
The Last Supper by Leonardo is very different to Tintoretto’s representation of the same incident. The last supper is one of the most important occurrences which took place in the Christian religion such an important event that many have seen the need for the event visually recorded through art the two most famous of these representations are by far Tintoretto’s and Leonardo’s works. The Last Supper by Leonardo was created during the renaissance period and is a simple symbolic work with little emotion. Tintoretto however chose to represent the event in a surrealistic manner to give full impact; A way in which was typical of the art period in which he painted the work, the Mannerist period. The two works although essentially containing the same subject differ immensely. This difference is strongly evident through the artists contrasting use of colour, light, realism, technique perception and focal point/s.
Mary Magdalene was a woman who was a mystery to many people for centuries. She was mentioned only a handful of times in the New Testament. Even though she was only mentioned a few times she carried a lot of character. To this day there is not an extended amount of information to help support people’s thoughts and ideas about this woman.
The two paintings and artists I am going to compare and contrast are "The Last Supper" by Leonardo Da Vinci (1452-1519) and "The Last Supper" by Jacopo Tintoretto (1518-1594). Although I am not a religious person, the sight of the painting by Tintoretto amazed me for the simple fact that it is so different from "The Last Supper" I grew up with.

He was a true renaissance man is regarded as one of the greatest minds of the renaissance era, displaying skills in numerous diverse areas of study. While he is most famous for his paintings such as the Mona Lisa and the Last Supper, Leonardo is also renowned in the fields of civil engineering, chemistry, geometry, mathematics, mechanical engineering, optics, and physics, Making his biggest contributions to mathematics and engineering through his amazing inventions. Leonardo da Vinci was very far ahead of his time which is why most of his inventions were not made practical until someone reinvented later in time, when technology caught up to his ideas.
He meant to get his ways of thinking out there for the world to see. He knew that if you were a deep thinker and learner as him, you would see and understand the way he saw and understood. He knew it would be a great asset to the Renaissance period and that he would leave an imprint on the world to view. I could tell that in the painting of The Last Supper that, he wanted you to be in deep thought and wonder what Jesus could have been talking about with his disciples. It has been rumors of what he was saying, but the truth is nobody really knows. It gets you to thinking because you are wondering like what he said, what they said back, what his reaction was when they did respond and what the ending result was. With the Mona Lisa, it leaves you in deep thought because you want to know what could she be smirking about or did he even mean to have that smirk on her face. He wants you to wonder what was the point of adding the slight smirk to her face, or could you just be seeing a smirk that actually was a frown. The memories and emotions of the artworks were based on religion and his thoughts of how a woman should be portrayed. The Mona Lisa looks innocent, natural and pure. It shows realism in the portrait, because of the way she is positioned in the painting. I believe Leonardo da Vinci made this artwork to compare the Mona Lisa to a mother-figure or his mother in particular. In conclusion, the Last Supper with Jesus and his disciples focused on what was happening at that time. I think he based it on the bible, but translated them into his own thoughts to show that it is possible to read something and comprehend it on a different level than how it was
The Last Supper is a giant 15feet tall by 29 feet wide painting created during the Renaissance period in the 15th century. Da Vinci was commissioned by Duke of Milan Ludovico Sforza and his duchess Beatrice d’Este. Da Vinci begin creating the portrait in 1495 and completing it in 1498. It is said that the painting of Last Supper is not a true fresco. Da Vinci decided not to apply paint on a wet plaster he experimented by painting directly on a dry plaster using tempura and oil paint. He used this technique to capture the look of an oil painting, but even within his lifetime it began to wear off.
