The legend of Orion can be found in work as early as the 7th or 8th century BC. The story of Orion was first told by Hesiod, but the full piece of work was soon lost. He then reappears in the greek literature work by Homer called the Odyssey. (Homer and Hesiod) Homer writes that Odysseus saw Orion when he was out hunting in the underworld. Orion is then mentioned again in Homer's work called the Iliad as a constellation, and Homer also wrote that Sirius the star was his dog. Aside from the few stories about him in the Homeric Poems most legends surrounding Orion can be found in incidental allusions. (Homer and Hesiod) Orion was an unbeatable, tall, armed, giant who was the most handsomest of all. In almost all the stories surrounding Orion and his life they state that his parents were Neptune the god of the sea and Queen Euryale, the daughter of King Minos. He is believed to have inherited his hunting and wilderness skills from his mother who was also the great huntress of the Amazons. One version is that he instantly fell in love with the Pleiades, the seven sisters. Before he could ever reach out to the Pleiades Zeus saw and immediately picked them up and dropped them in the sky among the stars. (Orion Constellation) Other sources say that Orion met and fell in love with King Oenopion’s daughter Merope. She however did not return the affection and so her father blinded Orion. He was currently working for the king as a huntsman, but was banished from the island of Chios.
