Greek Myths and Their Moral Lessons Did you know that a lot of lessons that your parents or grandparents tell you have derived from Greek mythology? Well if you didn’t, it’s a big possibility that they have told you lessons from the stories of Greek storytellers. Greek myths can teach you that everybody has a weakness, that good things can happen from bad situations, and that there are consequences to everything you do. Greek mythology can help you in your everyday life! This story shows that good things can happen from bad situations. To start it off, Hercules had two parents, Zeus and Hera. But Hercules’s father Zeus fell in love with a beautiful Greek woman named Alcmene. Zeus got her pregnant while her husband was away and without Hera knowing. Obviously, Hera was super mad and wanted to make sure the baby wasn’t born by any means possible. Yet the baby was born anyways. The baby was named “Herakles” and Hera wanted the baby gone even more. “The name Herakles means "glorious gift of Hera" in Greek, and that got Hera angrier still. Then she tried to kill the baby by sending snakes into his crib. “But little Hercules was one strong baby, and he strangled the snakes, one in each hand, before they could bite him.”” (Tufts, Paragraph 4). This is where they found out that he was a strong hero. He ended up strangling the snakes and killing them, something even many strong adults couldn’t do. This shows that not every bad situation will stay bad, good things can come out of these problems. And the good things that come out of this were that he grew up to be a hero and did countless great things in his lifetime, including things like saving people and killing terrible
Everyone knows the story of Hercules, but not everyone knows that it follows the same pattern as most hero stories. Hercules is a story about the son of Zeus. When Hercules was a baby, Pain and Panic, Hades’ evil henchmen, gave him a potion to turn him mortal. It was prophesied that this baby would be the one to defeat Hades and they didn’t want that to come true. Since Hercules was now mortal, he could no longer live on Mount Olympus. A couple on earth took him in so he could grow up as a human. Hercules knew something was different about himself, so when he grew up, he set out to discover who he really was. Even though Hercules is an ancient Greek myth, it still follows Joseph Campbell’s modern basic outline of a hero’s journey.
First of all, the character Hercules was a non-hero who later received the power of strength. As a young boy Hercules wished to overcome any problem and always had in mind to be a strong man and to do the impossible. For example, in the movie , Hercules is a hard working kid who later by his parents gained a valuable power of strength being “introduced in ordinary surrounding in a mundane world, doing mundane things “ (Linda Seger 2) Hercules could not believe where all his strength was coming from because he had become too powerful to believe. ... When one looks far enough into Hercules’ life, they will see that “struggle and strain are at the demigod’s mythic core” (Simmons, 2008, p. 635). The saying “don’t judge a book by it’s cover” proves to be true yet again. In order to see a person/god/hero for who they really are, we need to look deep. Yes Hercules was heroic but what led to his heroism is overseen by most.
In Greek mythology there are many life lessons to be learned. These are life skills. Such as, always listen to your parents, and always follow the directions you are given, being kind to everyone.

Heroes are found everywhere. They are seen in movies, on television, in books, and in reality. A hero can be anyone from a friend to a fictional character. To be considered a hero, one must make selfless sacrifices, develop and learn, overcome challenges and temptations, and ultimately present their known world with a gift of any kind. Homer’s The Odyssey paints a picture of the supposed savior Odysseus. The irony of Odysseus’ situation is that he really is not the marvelous hero that many who read The Odyssey see him to be. When imagining a great hero, the words of cruel, unfaithful, selfish, or careless never come to mind, but the son of Laertes sets examples for each attribute. Odysseus makes many poor decisions that cause his dislikable traits to highly outweigh his few better ones. Several of his more prominent characteristics are exhibited on numerous accounts. Odysseus cannot possibly earn the title of being a hero because he harbors hubris, he displays a lack of faith, and his self-centeredness causes unfortunate events.
Imagine living in a world where there is constant death and turmoil. Husbands and sons are being killed in an act of bravery; women as well as daughters are taken to fulfill the winners’ sexual desires. At a young age myths were told to us for entertainment. Now as the same myths are read today a deeper meaning can be found in the stories once believed to be a bedtime story. Myths that are told often represent the culture at the time; Greece is constantly changing and involved with wars.
Every hero in Greek mythology produces some type of lesson for all of us to take heed to. Each hero fell in and out of favor with the gods and was forced to do unthinkable tasks. But, without these heroes, Greek mythology would not be what it is today. The heroes of their time are what made the history of the Greeks come together. As shown by Hercules, Perseus, and Theseus, a great deal of courage was required of them along with sacrifices.
Everyone knows the famous Herakles also known as Hercules the hero. I believe Hercules is a great hero for many reasons. Let me sum up his history, Hercules is the son of Zeus and Alcmene. However, Zeus has a wife named Hera & he cheated on her with Alcmene who got pregnant with his baby. So Hera found out & was very angry, she vowed to make Hercules life dreadful since she couldn't make Zeus's life horrid. Hercules that married a beautiful woman of the name Megara they had two children, Hera took advantage of that & sent him a fit of rage in which he murdered his wife & children. Over time different beliefs surrounding the mystery of life after death have accumulated in different religions, societies and history. Undeniable by all as an inevitable fate , is the definition has changed over time . Exactly what happens in life after death ? Is there a difference in the qual there is a heaven and a hell ? Or is it simply just an underworld in which all souls come ? Regardless of faith or time period , several authors of all ages have considered these questions in high esteem. But each story is different and belief , whether Dante , Homer or Cervantes, all agree that death is inevitable and with it eternal life.

The story of his labours contains many reasons why Hercules is classified as a classical hero. Hercules exhibits many of the traits of a classical hero, including numerous guides, hazardous journeys and several hardships and afflictions.

Each of the Greek myths has a moral message through the stories that are written. It teaches us the good deeds and wrongdoing of the gods and goddesses, and how we, as a human being, should act. Thus, Greek mythology should be taught to high school students.
“The Labors of Hercules” is a tale written by the Perseus Project. This tale shows that even when bad things happen, good things will come later. However, those good things will only come if you work for them, even when things don’t go your way. The Disney version of this story, made in 1997, is a tale whose moral is basically the same as the Perseus project. The two tales start out differently, but are similar in plots. In the story, Hercules ends up becoming a hero after overcoming several setbacks. These setback occur in the beginning of the story, the things that get in Hercules way in the story’s, Hercules becoming a hero all are very similar but alike in ways.
In conclusion, myths reflect show us the Greeks view on the world, religion, and nature. Their understanding of the world is both similar and different compared to modern society. Myths also reflect the importance of gods in the Greek society and how each god represented something different. In addition, we can see the role of monsters in myths, what they represent and how were they important. Myths also show us the role of women in society and whether they were as important as men or not.
