Webster’s dictionary defines wisdom as, “the quality or state of being wise; knowledge of what is true or right coupled with just judgment as to action; sagacity, discernment, or insight.” (p. 724) To gain such knowledge, one may consider many years of school. Perhaps a Bachelor’s degree or even a Master’s degree will help one to achieve great wisdom. Or maybe just a life time of experience is what one needs to gain this kind of wisdom. Wright (1989) defines wisdom as “The practical translation and application of the Word of God to everyday life.” (p. 69) Wright (1989) does not speak of the kind of wisdom gained through scholarly books. He speaks of Biblical wisdom. He speaks of the wisdom that comes from great scriptures such as Proverbs 2:10-11, “When wisdom enters your heart, and knowledge is pleasant to your soul, discretion will preserve you; understanding will keep you.” (The Holy Bible NKJV, 1986) According to Wright, (1989) there are 4 important components to achieving the kind of wisdom he speaks about.

I have heard it said that a smart person learns from his own mistakes but a wise person learns from the mistakes of others. In the two books, The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde and SHE, we have two characters that emerge as wise men. In Jekyll, it is the character of Utterson, the stoic but curious lawyer, and in SHE it is the character of Holly, the stoic but curious academic. It is interesting to note that neither character chooses this fate of wise man, but rather has it thrust upon him through fate and curious circumstances. It is because of their high moral character that they are selected to bear witness to extraordinary events. The question is, how far are we willing to go to push the bounds of knowledge; when do we stop being smart and start being wise?

Folly is the act of having the knowledge of the benefits of making a good choice, but rather choosing the wrong or foolish decision. Diligence is the act of being aware of something. Therefore, one who often postpones activities and comes up with excuses is lazy (Hindson & Yates, 2012). One looks forward to the future with an expected hope, and faith that God’s blessings will meet them wherever God leads with abundance. After studying the Old Testament chapters assigned this week, wisdom was clearly displayed through the life of Job. The Lord proclaimed to Satan in Job 1:8 what a “perfect” and “upright man” Job was, “one that fears the Lord.” Satan answered the Lord saying that Job was only good because he had been blessed with so much. The Lord told Satan that he could test Job to prove the love that Job had for the Lord. Job was tested many times, but through it all Job continued to pursue wisdom by fearing God and straying from evil. In Job 28:28, Job communicated his understanding of just how important it was to be diligent and faithful to the Lord when he said to the human race, “Behold, the fear of the Lord, that is wisdom; and to depart from evil is understanding.” Job understood what it meant to be wise, and God was pleased with the way Job reacted to the tests. When I think about what counts as learning to me, I think about my life. Just being able to live in this world to me is a learning experience, because I feel that my life is full of lessons and I believe that it takes lessons to learn in life. I feel that I have learned to understand learning more and to also understand the value of learning. As I get older I can comprehend subject matters more than I could ever do before. I am learning to be more serious and I find myself not taking life for granted anymore.
What kind of experience can be called an education? Is it the practice of stuffing knowledge or information into the brains of students? Or is it the activity in which the master shows their apprentices the proper skills to make delicate works? People are prone to accumulate possessions. For some, they stock up substantial materials. But others prefer to possess knowledge. There were many sophists who proclaimed themselves to be omniscient and gave instructions to anyone who sought for their help. As we have noticed, “certain professors of education must be wrong when they say that they can put a knowledge into the soul which was not there before, like sight into blind eyes” (Plato 4). Education can only be done when the restrictions are removed and the latent potentials of students are provoked. In the soul of everyone there already exists the power and capacity of learning. Education is to activate those powers and capacities so as to complete the ascent from becoming into being.
There is no one single definition for what education really is. Experts and scholars from the beginning have viewed and commented about education in different ways. When I think about knowledge the first thing that comes to my mind is education. I believe that knowledge comes to people by their experiences in life. In other words, life is an instrument that leads me to gain knowledge. Many people consider that old people are wise because they have learned from good and bad experiences throughout their lives.
