One of the stereotypes/myths is, viewing all Latinos/Hispanics Americans as illegal aliens, most Latinos/Hispanics do not fall into this category because the majority are U.S. citizens or legal residents. Another stereotypes/myths is, viewing all Latinos/Hispanic Americans as lazy and as poor workers, the Latino/Hispanic community supporters argue that it is difficult to understand how someone can work from dawn to dusk in the migrant farm field each day be called “lazy” and “poor worker”. Additional stereotype/myths is, perceiving Latino/Hispanics Americans as uneducated and uninterested in educational pursuits, that according to the previously mentioned 2010 Census, 63 percent of Hispanics 25 and older have at least a high school education;
When you think of Hispanics, the first thing that comes to mind is, obviously a group of men mowing your lawn or an uneducated single mom with five young kids. Most people think that we, Hispanics, do not know how to speak English at all or are illegally in the United States. All Hispanics have been put into the category of the stereotypical Hispanic by Americans. We are all viewed falsely the same way uneducated, illegal, and all Mexican.
From the early ages of American film, Latino women have been portrayed in a negative light. Has this image changed over the years? The answer to this question is left up to the viewer, but there is one thing that has not changed in the portrayal of Latino women in American film. That is the clear distinction between two stereotypes of Latino women; the "innocent, passive Madonna" and the "hot blooded, fiery, sexy whore". In the case of the hot-blooded tamale, these images date back to the 1930’s in Lupe Velez and to the present Rosie Perez. Dolores Del Rio and Maria Montez represent the virgin Senorita. (Rodriguez 75-7) These are just some of the actresses that have portrayed characters that fit into these two stereotypes. Other actresses include Carmen Miranda, Natalie Wood, and Rita Moreno. These actresses are featured in the following films, West Side Story, Flying Down to Rio, Mexican Spitfire, and White Men Can't Jump. These two stereotypes have been carried out in American cinema from the thirties to today and are a common theme in many films.
It is true that “The George Lopez Show” does not stoop to the usual levels of stereotyping Hispanics as lazy or gang members (Morales, 2002). For the most part the show does a good job in portraying Hispanics in a non stereotypical way, however, the way that certain characters on the show talk, such as the mother and the brother, are very much the stereotypical Mexican dialect. Also, Lopez’s children are extremely lazy, which is stereotypical of the Hispanic culture, although its also very abundant in teenage culture too (Morales, 2002).
Latino/a immigrants share similar experiences of anti-immigrant rhetoric, just like other immigrant groups. Many Latino/as in America have faced negative comments based on their identity. For example, Rush Limbaugh, a radio host, expounds negative comments toward Latino/as, particularly Mexicans. He claimed that Mexicans are “a renegade, potential[ly] criminal element” that is “unwilling to work” (Media Matters for America, 2/28/06). These malice comments were similar to those of other immigrants.
Whether they were on Broadway or in Hollywood, being a Hispanic actor meant you were put into this stereotyped box that was and is hard to break through. How many times has there been a Hispanic or Latino in the role of a hero, wealthy man/woman, or doctor in film or television? The following quote from Lin Manuel Miranda is to explain the struggles of a male Hispanic actor aspiring to be on Broadway. “I couldn’t see a way for me [a Latino man] to have a career in musical theater based on the musicals that already existed. I don’t dance well enough to play Bernardo [of ‘West Side Story’], or Paul in ‘A Chorus Line.’ And I don’t have an operatic voice enough to play the ‘Man of La Mancha.’ And if you’re a Latino man, that’s all you get… I
Puerto Ricans, just like many other ethnic groups, are victims of stereotypes and prejudices. These individuals have been labeled as lazy, submissive, etc. However, one of the main stereotypes that affects Puerto Ricans, to this day, is the one that labels them as criminals. There are many media representations that continue to identify Puerto Ricans as criminals, even though that may not be the case. Unfortunately, for many ethic groups, the media plays a major role in regards to their stereotypes. The Play “Los Vendidos” by Luis Valdez has a lot of stereotypes and racism, the racial majority is the Mexican race and they are seen differently from other races and ethnicities. “Los Vendidos” has a connection to Valdez’s childhood and to all the Mexican immigrant families in the United States. Mexicans are not just seen as hard working people but criminals and slaves. What is Valdez trying to persuade about the Mexican race? Valdez is trying to persuade that the racism towards mexicans should end, because we as human beings are equal.
Latinos have struggled to discover their place inside of a white America for too many years. Past stereotypes and across racism they have fought to belong. Still America is unwilling to open her arms to them. Instead she demands assimilation. With her pot full of stew she asks, "What flavor will you add to this brew?" Some question, some rebel, and others climb in. I argue that it is not the Latino who willingly agreed to partake in this stew. It is America who forced her ideals upon them through mass media and stale history. However her effort has failed, for they have refused to melt.
Across all three films, a clear metamorphosis in the commentary of Americans is present. In Hello America, which was released before 9/11, the commentary surrounds idealized versions of America versus the reality of it, as shown by the main character’s imaginings of living in the White House, only to be detained on the plane for his mustard being mistaken for a germ bomb. In this film, Americans are stereotyped as chaotic, the characters constantly repeat that the country’s in chaos, having inversed morals, they are arrested for disturbing a kissing couple when they expected them to be arrested for the public affection, and being selfish, as the family the main characters stay with take their valuables for their own.

Today, the Hispanic population has grown tremendously over the years. We have watched the Hispanics community growth rate grow faster than any other racial and ethnic group in the nation. The Hispanic culture and community has populated all around the United States, introducing new traditions and customs. I was traveling to different to city in the States, I notice the wide spread growth of Hispanic communities, For Instance in Miami the Cuban and El Salvadoran culture is heavy populate in the area. In New York the Puerto Rican culture is dominating through out the several boroughs. I have come around town and Hispanics are known for their good food, which tends to have more diverse people try new cultural customs. Hispanic or Latino Americans are a group of people made up of distinct characteristics. Hispanics or Latinos are defined as a people of Mexican, Puerto Rican, Cuban, South or Central American, or other Spanish speaking cultures.
Roma are a cultural group whose life revolves around the stereotypes which have followed them throughout time. They are not accepted in society due to stereotypes nor is an attempt to understand them as a culture made today. Roma are a nomadic group who rely on travel to survive. They have no set home land, or origin, which is a source to many of their problems. This single fact alone is what has produced the hurtful stereotypes in which follow them and they face daily. Development of conclusions made from living a nomadic lifestyle is a direct reasoning to many of the stereotypes one may think of when Roma are mentioned. One moment in history for Roma has never been happy because they always faced some sort of discrimination. Though hate crimes still do occur to this day, government officials do little to nothing to stop them. In many instances, Roma are not treated equal which all goes back to the idea of prejudice. People tend to hate what they can’t understand and Roma are an example of that. Resorting to hate crimes and discrimination has also resulted badly on Roma as well. They’re population overtime has even decreased over time because of the high level of discrimination and the resorts people will go through to rid the world of Roma. Ultimately, stereotypes of Roma, a nomadic European population, have resulted in them facing prejudice actions which then have led to them being unaccepted and unemployable due to their nonexistent acceptance in society.
First, I think what I have learned outside of school is more memorable than my academic learning experiences, and I think that I have more insights about which topic I have chosen. These factors would make the topic easier to write for me.
Latinos face a lot of discrimination when they come to the united stated or they try to assimilate to the American culture. Most immigrants have to deal with the police investigating them because they think they are all drug dealers or are in some type of illegal organization. They also have to deal with people calling them names because of their skin color. Americans also accuse Hispanics of stealing their jobs (Ramos, 53). They also face seeing racist graffiti on homes or wall of a building and they have to face hate crimes (Plunkett, 15). They sometimes get excluded from white communities (Plunkett, 39). Latinos are also blamed for serious problems the country faces (Ramos, 195). There are reasons for Americans to discriminate Latinos and reasons why they shouldn’t discriminate them.
For example, Hispanic immigrants are far more prone to commit crimes than Japanese immigrants. This makes it unfair to consider that because a Japanese person is an immigrant, they are also more prone to commit crimes. Much like in the past, the public debate over immigration today is laced with myths and often portrays immigrants as uneducated, unemployed and, because of various social- and health-related problems, are a drain on our welfare and healthcare systems.... ... middle of paper ...
