In Shakespeare’s famous play “Hamlet” the characters Hamlet, the prince of Denmark, and Laertes, son of Polonius, who also acts as a foil to Hamlet’s character, both display traits and respond to conflict in certain ways through out the play that can both be compared and contrasted.

Both Hamlet and Laertes display spontaneous reactions when they are irritated. When Laertes finds out his father had been murdered Laertes immediately puts the blame on King Claudius. As a result of Laertes’s anger he attempts to avenge his fathers death. "To hell, allegiance! vows, to the blackest devil! Conscience and grace, to the profoundest pit! I dare damnation: to this point I stand, that both worlds I give to negligence, let come what comes; only I'll be revenged most thoroughly for my father." (Act 4, Scene 5) this quote allows us to see into Laertes's mind showing his plan for revenge. In contrast to Laertes plotting vengeance of his father's killer, Hamlet suspects that the person spying on his conversation with his mother, Gertrude is king Claudius ("Nay, I know not: is it the King?" Hamlet showed much love for his father and was devastated when he is murdered. Hamlet expresses suicidal thoughts in the first acts of the play due to his father’s death. Hamlet feels that he must avenge his father, but is unable to do so because he is not confident in being successful. Laertes shows very little to no emotion over the demise of his father, but is quick to take revenge. It is quite obvious that while Hamlet truly admires his father, Laertes is more concerned with the impressing the family, being “the hero” by avenging his father’s death than with the realization that his father is deceased.
