Recommended: The Advantages and Disadvantages of Being Bilingual

Language Classes in School
Did you know that only 20% of people in the United States are bilingual? Compared to other countries, this percentage is significantly low. This is due to many reasons, one being that in numerous states, language classes in schools are not required for graduation. These language classes, which are therefore made electives, do not sufficiently teach people to become fluent in a language. Only an hour or two of language classes a week will only really allow you to be able to conjugate verbs, rather than be able to carry a conversation in a different language. Language classes should be taught effectively and be mandatory in schools since being bilingual has countless benefits. Being multilingual is important because it is healthy for your brain, will aid you in future careers, and will enable you to communicate effectively with others.
There are multiple cognitive benefits of learning another language. Studies such as one conducted at York University in Toronto found that bilingual children have greater cognitive flexibility, an enhanced awareness of how language works, and well-developed social interaction skills. Some people may say that knowing another language will confuse you during tests and cause you to make mistakes in your writing. However, since being bilingual gives you greater intellectual flexibility due to the effects it has on your brain and thinking skills, proficient multilingual people are proven to receive higher test scores than those who only know English. Additionally, knowing multiple languages makes you more valuable to employers and can help you obtain a career in a tough job market.
