In Macbeth, it is argued that masculinity has power and control. To be a man, you must be strong and hold power and do whatever it is needed to achieve that power. Lady Macbeth successfully manipulates her husband by giving herself power, and by allowing herself to take on a masculine role. In Act 1, Scene 5, Lines 1-15, she challenges her husband's strengths because she believes he’s too kind to get any power by himself, she states “It is too full o’th’ milk of human kindness.” Lady Macbeth is basically telling that he needs to toughen up, and man up to get what he wants; she basically manipulates him by challenging his masculinity—she does this successfully. Lady Macbeth then tries to manipulate Macbeth even further by making the assumption that she can be a better man than her husband. In Act 1, Scene 5, Lines 35-40, she states “Come, you spirits that tend on mortal thoughts, unsex me here.” What she accomplishes from this is that she wants to assume a male identity to do the things that Macbeth is too afraid to do. She manipulates Macbeth into being a man by telling him what she would do if she promised to do something. In Act 1, Scene 7, Lines 55-59, Lady Macbeth states, “Have plucked my nipple from his boneless gums and dashed the brains out…” Lady Macbeth basically states she would kill a baby if she promised she would do so because she would keep to her word, just like Macbeth should. She challenges his masculinity to manipulate him into keeping to his word.
