As a non-white and female, I agree with the fact that whites and males do have more privileges and advantages than other races and females. White privilege is more structural such as being able to purchase or rent a place to live or making a remark or even using poor manners without her whole race being blamed. Heterosexual privilege is more individual such as being able to travel without a spouse and talk about one’s social life. In Peggy McIntosh’s essay, she stated that there were parallels between white privilege and male privilege; that it is both an ever present concept that either group fails to acknowledge. However, white’s are told that they have an “invisible package of unearned assets that they can count on chasing in each day, but about which they were “meant” to remain oblivious too” (page 345). They have certain freedoms and advantages, but are taught not to look at them as privileges but something they are innately given. In “La conciencia de la mestiza”, the same concept applies; however, whites are no longer the focus. This essay states that being sandwiched in between two cultures, multiple opposing messages are sent and therefore individuals are confused on what to follow or believe. Mestiza, is the word used to refer to women who are brought up with two different backgrounds. Mestiza’s feel inferior to whites or others who are solely dedicated to one culture, because these individuals who are dedicated to one culture know what they believe and associate with. Mestiza’s do not know what they believe in and are confused and is stuck between two cultures; they feel as they do not have the same privileges or advantages are
