In conclusion, time management, the SQ3R method, and a positive attitude are good skills to have to succeed in college. LSAT 300 has introduced me to many new skills that will help me succeed in college. Also, I have gained more confidence and know I believe I can succeed in any class. LSAT 300 is a great class for new college students or seven juniors and seniors. Everyone can benefit from taking this class.
Throughout my years in high school I have never been the best at writing. I have struggled and failed numerous times and I just didn 't think I would ever get any better when it came down to writing in my English classes. I always had to ask my parents to help me comprehend words, phrases and also how to pronounce certain words. For example my junior year of high school it was time to prepare ourselves for the SAT and ACT testing which are standardized tests that every student must take if they want to further their education in college. When I took the test for the first time I felt like I failed miserable because my score was so low. I received a 14 my very first time taking the ACT, and my lowest score was in reading. I was so embarrassed
Renee has taught 30 students this year to conquer the tests. Her students SAT scores have increased by 100-200 points. Her ACT students have raised their scores by 5-10 points. She has numerous success stories:
I would like to explain why I took the LSAT three times. To explain my low LSAT scores, I would first have to explain why and how I was diagnosed with a learning disability at Florida State University. In 2001, my academic advisor advised and referred to Florida State’s Adult and Learning Evaluation Center, because I was failing most of the college level mathematic courses. I completed a psycho-education evaluation and assessment test and was diagnosed with a learning disability that contributed from academic problems, associated with college level mathematics. After my assessment, I received extended test time and alternative testing accommodation for all my mathematic courses. Because I did not have the proper the resources available to me, all my college level mathematics “F” grades on my transcripts were removed and replaced with “WDs”. After receiving test accommodations at FSU, my mathematics grades improved significantly and I over came my learning disability block with the help of Florida State’s resource center.
Nowadays, colleges and universities have been using the SAT to select their students who apply to them. According to College Board, the SAT is a test that measures students' abilities which they will use to be able to do well in universities or colleges. In addition, the SAT shows how well the students solve the problems and how well the education they have gotten. The SAT consists of ten sections which consist of one 25-minute essay section, two 25-minute and one 20-minute math problem sections, four 25-minute, one 20-minute, and one 10-minute English problem sections. Therefore, the total time to do all the sections is three hours and forty-five minutes ("SAT Reasoning Test").
The most important hurdle to overcome in the course was mainly myself and my old writing habits. Adjusting to the course is a goal that one needs to overcome post-haste, the more time it takes one to adjust, the worse your grade will be. A critical aspect of adjusting is the ability to change the writing requirements based on what class one is in. By figuring out the appropriate text to use in each class, it would help one adjust to the course faster. In my history class, writing is mainly facts piled on other facts with no set of techniques, while writing class involves a lot more critical thinking. I extremely enjoyed this course because I found that I can express my own personal views while maintaining the foundation of my papers.
Until this past spring I hadn't thought much about what I wanted to do or where I wanted to go for college. One day in the spring the junior class had a meeting in the auditorium about taking our ACT test and college plans. After that meeting I realized I needed a change, getting into college wasn't going to be a breeze, kind of how I had treated high school. Although I always considered myself to be fairly smart, I never had put much effort into school, but after seeing the facts and requirements to get into schools, and especially after hearing Ms. Rice saying "In today's world, the way to a successful future, is choosing college as your future", I knew I had to make an adjustment for the better so that college could be my future.
“When in doubt eat fruit.” That is the advice Francesca Haller gives her daughter, Nicole, any time Nicole is hungry and isn’t sure what she wants. Nicole is a sophomore American Sign Language major at Northeastern University.
Around half of students get jobs out of college (Wei). That is an frightful statistic that inclines people to conceive that attending a more competitive college is necessary to job attainment. Each American dreams of becoming a successful person, one who reaches their goals, maybe has a family, and a steady income. Some seem to regard that in order to reach that level of success they must attend an elite school, a school that is usually private, and only admits fewer than ten percent of applicants. The Ivy league receives much attention among the elite schools. “Only 0.4 percent of undergraduates attend one of the Ivy League schools... too much attention is paid to these eight institutions” (O'Shaughnessy).
Determining college readiness is an essential part in determining who will qualify as a good candidate for admission into a college or a university. The last thing that colleges want is for students to qualify for admission and drop out, this affects drop out rate and graduation rate. According Robin Chait and Andrea Venezia (2009),
I’ve started leafing an LSAT book I bought and believe I’m going to need lot more practice than I initially thought I would. The course will hold me accountable and show me other study strategy methods that will help me outside the course. I am the first generation in my family to go to college therefore also going to be the first to go to grad school. This being the case I’ve never had a mentor but the teachers, counselors, books, I’ve sought whenever in doubt or in need of advice. I believe this course will be another great “mentor” and overall stepping stone that will help me reach my goals of going to a good school. It’ll be the foundation to endless
I truly hope that you will take my application into consideration for the Loyola University Maryland School of Education. Teaching and education is a passion of mine and I feel that this graduate program will help me hone my skills to become a well-rounded and effective educator. I bring to the table experience in academic research and applied experience as an employee of the Harford County Public Schools.
I have always had a passion to learn. My interest is in political theory and economics, hoping someday to become a lawyer and stateswoman. I realize that in order to reach any of these goals, a college degree is vital. When I in turn reach my goals, I will use them to encourage and uplift my community by investing my time, money, energy, and influence to become a stepping stone for others.
There are so many people in the world pursuing similar goals that it is difficult to determine beyond surface level qualifications what makes one person different from the next. To me, the best way to distinguish people is to place them in stressful situations and examine their behavior. The people that emerge from these situations as great leaders take responsibility for their actions, have a long range view, and are genuinely interested in the development of others. Unfortunately, while under stress, many people display actions that are self-serving, and as a result, the overall community, whether academic or professional is impaired. Georgia Law can admit the best and brightest minds to form its incoming class. However, it is not the skills and experiences of the incoming class that will ultimately determine the greatness of the program. The strength of the program will be established by how each member chooses to use their strengths.
Who or what is to say that a student is ready for college? No one person or entity can tell a high school graduate concretely that they are or are not ready to enter into the higher institute of learning. What they can do is provide relevant insight or guidelines to self assess if one believes they are ready for college. College readiness is not a term that can be packaged in one definition. There are numerous definitions for college readiness. Conley has defined the word in similar but different terminology himself. With the varying definitions, there is some commonality between all the definitions. The focus for defining college readiness is to state if a student is prepare to enroll and go through college. Throughout my lifetime, goals have always been a determining factor in the way I approach my day. Whether it be making the middle school talent show, or getting a good score on a test, goals have always been there to push me forward. Now that I have entered college, my long lists of goals have been a little more specific. Unlike before, I now acknowledge the specific strengths and weaknesses I have when reaching for them. For this school year, I have come up with three very important goals that I believe will help strengthen and make my first year in college a little more memorable. This year I will use numerous strategies to become better at effective speaking, reading difficult texts, and have a deeper knowledge in the engineering field.
