Knowledge constitutes a theme of debates for a long time because it’s one of the most important things in our lives. There are different kinds of knowledge, and also different methods to relate the knowledge to the soul or mind. Aristotle constitutes a great contributor of the study of the essence, or nature of knowledge, soul and mind, and likewise in their relationship. In De Anima, Aristotle discusses about the knowledge of the soul. The knowledge about the soul contributes to the truth in general aspects, and likewise, contributes to understanding the essence and properties of the alive organisms. De Anime by Aristotle, constitutes an important tool to understand the knowledge of the soul, the characteristics of the soul, and the way that we acquire knowledge.
Aristotle describes in De Anime about the knowledge of the soul. According to Aristotle (2000), there are different kinds of knowledge, which could be separated by its importance. In this context the knowledge about the soul, should be in the first category because this has a huge contribution to the truth in general aspects, and likewise, contributes to understanding the essence and properties of the alive organisms. The 'doctrine of recollection' states that all true knowledge exists implicitly within us, and can be brought to consciousness - made explicit - by recollection. In conclusion, it remains that, even after being around for over 2000 years, Aristotle’s philosophy on human nature remains one of the most accurate questions to the eternal question of “what is human nature?” It may not, in the end, prove to be the correct answer to the question, in fact, it may very well be possible that there is no definite answer possible. The relationship of the human soul and physical body is a topic that has mystified philosophers, scholars, scientists, and mankind as a whole for centuries. Human beings, who are always concerned about their place as individuals in this world, have attempted to determine the precise nature or state of the physical form. They are concerned for their well-being in this earthly environment, as well as their spiritual well-being; and most have been perturbed by the suggestion that they cannot escape the wrongs they have committed while in their physical bodies.
Socrates and Plato had a very distinct view on the human life and what constitutes a living of a “good life”-a life that would allow man access to the forms. Socrates was Plato’s teacher, and throughout much of Plato’s works, Socrates is the main character, who is ultimately the mouthpiece to express Plato’s ideas about life. These ideas were centralized around the idea of an immortal soul and one’s location of critical thinking and reasoning. Socrates and Plato believed that the soul was the home to reasoning and the body was a mere obstacle that hindered the pursuit of true knowledge. However, this theory may not be valid due to the knowledge that we possess today about the brain, senses, and biology of the human body.
Therefore, through the soul, that has been born before being placed into a physical human body, the human has knowledge. As a result of the soul being immortal and knowing everything, Socrates ties that idea of immortality with the theory of recollection, which claims that our knowledge is inside of us because of the soul and it never learns anything new, only remembers, consequently, serving as an evidence that the soul is pre- existent. Socrates uses the knowledge of the soul to explain that there is no such thing as learning but instead there is discovery of the knowledge that one has and does, by himself, without receiving new information. However, most knowledge is forgotten at birth since we are born without knowing, for example, how to add, subtract,talk, etc. Nonetheless, the knowledge we have, has to be recollected with the help of a teacher.
