Through the years of 1882-1951, 4,730 people were lynched in the United States. These lynchings were done by hanging, shooting, being burned alive, maiming, dismemberment, castration, and other brutal methods. The novel Of Mice and Men, written by John stein, was published in 1937. It tells the story of two migrant workers who worked on a ranch during the Great Depression. Their names were Lennie Smalls, a mentally disabled man, and George Milton, Lennie’s Guardian. I think George did the right thing by killing Lennie because he would have regretted not killing Lennie himself, Lennie would continue to make awful mistakes if they didn’t kill him, and he didn’t want Lennie to suffer, so he did it with love. Candy says after Carlson killed his dog, “‘I ought to of shot that dog myself, George. I shouldn’t ought to of let no stranger shoot my dog.’” It would have been the same for George. George would have regretted letting Curley shoot Lennie because George doesn’t know Curley that well. George says on page 90, “‘I ain’t gonna let ‘em hurt Lennie. Now you listen. The guys might think I was in on it. I’m gonna go in the bunk house. Then in a minute you come out and tell the guys about her…’” George went in the bunk house to grab Carlson’s luger, and he knew that he had to get to Lennie so that he could kill him before the others did. Next, if George did not kill Lennie, Lennie would continue to make awful mistakes, such as killing someone. George says on page 14, “‘Well, look Lennie, if you jus’ happen to get in trouble like you always done before, I want you to come right here an’ hide in the brush.’” Lennie has always gotten in trouble wherever they go, that is why they have to travel a lot, and look for jobs. If you loved someone that much, and you were in this situation, you too wouldn’t have much of a choice. This is the world that we did live in, and still do live in.
