Who Is Responsible For Lennie's Death

Does it make sense if someone decided to kill someone else because they thought it was for the best? Imagine being the person shot or the person who pulls the trigger. It may seem hard to comprehend but sure enough this is what happened in the novella Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck. In this novella, two migrant workers, Lennie and George, are always traveling together to find work during the Great Depression. Lennie is a big, strong man who has an unknown mental disorder while George is a small yet strong fellow who watches over Lennie. Since they have known each other a long time, it creates tragic but admirable ending because of the difficult choice George chooses to end Lennie’s innocent yet troubling life.
George is an admirable character because he has the courage to kill Lennie himself instead of letting the other men find and kill him. George shows great concern about Lennie when Lennie asks him if he will give Lennie hell about accidentally breaking Curley’s wife’s neck. Instead, George simply replies, “You can’t remember nothing that happens, but you remember ever’ word I say”(Steinbeck,101). Due to Lennie’s mental disorder, he can not recall much from his past which is another reason why George regrets what he has said in the past. In reality, George

George kills Lennie because he did not want to witness Lennie being hurt or killed carelessly, run off by in his own and not being able to take care for himself, and Lennie’s mental disorder will never change how Lennie reacts to certain situations. Many believe taking the life of another without consent is unacceptable but in certain situations like George’s, he has to decide due to Lennie’s mental disorder that was leading him into unpleasant situations.
