Recommended: Transformation of family in the metamorphosis

Kafka utilizes Gregor’s family’s response to Gregor’s metamorphosis to convey the limits of sympathy. In the beginning of the story, Gregor is perceived as an income to his family rather than part of it. His parents seemed to never sympathize with him nor with his problems. They expected him to always hold the house down despite the circumstances. Once Gregor can no longer provide money he is no use to the family. He is seen and treated as a burden by his parents and sister, Grete. Although the family is shocked and horrified by the monstrous bug Gregor has became, they attempted to sympathize with his situation and take care of him. His sister does most of the work, but her parents do not restrain her from doing so. The first weeks Gregor …show more content…

His mother attempted to visit Gregor in his room after he became a bug, but wasn’t allowed by the father and Grete who wanted to spear her the discomfort of seeing Gregor in that unbearable state. Gregor's father never treated Gregor with the respect and appreciation he deserved, he did however have some pity by letting him stay in the house in his room without ever forcing him out of the apartment. Although he was compassionate of Gregor’s bug form, when Gregor comes out of his room once and causes commotion with the mother, he attempts to kill Gregor by tossing an apple at his back. Grete was the only one who stood by her brothers side and defended him, despite being unsure if the bug was really Gregor. The sister grows tired of having to balance her job and various occasions of great discomfort Gregor provoked to the family in various occasions, like when he let their inhabitants, the lodgers, spot him causing them to want to leave without paying rent. Grete decides that the bug is not Gregor, and that if it was Gregor he would've of left the family long ago to avoid them any distress so that they could forever remember him with honor and integrity rather than a monstrous bug. She cares dearly for Gregor which is first shown by her distress as Gregor does not wake up at his usual time. It is evident that Gregor’s mother has the hardest time coping with his transformation.
