In the case of 13 year old John Black, whom is from a single parent home, was charged with and adjudicated for possession of a firearm while on school property. The prosecution filed a petition and John’s case was waived into adult court, however, the judge determined that he would best be served in juvenile court. The judge sentence John to five years’ probation and ordered him to complete a community based treatment program. In the state of California one of the juvenile justice system’s goal is public safety. While their goal for adult offenders is punishment, their goal for juvenile offenders is treatment and rehabilitation. In this case I recommend John Black to be placed in the Jeopardy program which I believe can and will have a positive impact on him and his future endeavors. The jeopardy program is geared toward at risk children aged 8 through 17 and their parents. This program is supported by the community, schools and the police department, they offer their strength, expertise, encouragement, motivation and dedication toward providing these youths with a lifelong attitudinal change toward their goals.
This program offers numerous educational tutoring, mentoring, martial arts and physical projects. The goals of this program are to decrease truancy, improve academics, improve self-respect, self-esteem, develop conflict resolution, goal setting skills, improve grades, decrease violent/deviant behavior, and become productive/successful individuals.
My second recommendation for John is a residential treatment camp. This is a camp Community Placement program which provides rigorous intervention in a residential setting. John would receive health, educational, and family assessments that are tailored to meet his personal needs. The goal of this program is to reunite him with his family and the community, and to assist him in achieving a productive successful non-violent crime free
