Juno: Analysis From The Feminist Perspective

For the movie, Juno, I would like to use an alternative approach of analysis from the feminist perspective. I chose this path because this is my first movie analysis and I don’t know all the film terms or the behind the scene techniques yet to write a formal analysis. Through this class, I’m learning how to not just watch a movie, but also analytically look at one and look forward to writing a proper formal analysis later on. I specifically chose to examine this movie from the feminist viewpoint because I am a female and I can relate to certain elements from the movie. I am going to evaluate the men in Juno's life and her relationship with each one: her own father, her baby’s father, and the baby’s potential adoptive father.

Both Juno and Paulie keep their true feelings for one another to themselves. Juno assumed he didn’t want to be involved, therefore making all of the decisions herself and not involving Paulie. However, he wanted to be involved and be there for her because he loved her, but never expressed this because he thought she didn’t feel the same way. Adding to the miscommunication, Juno tells him, almost forcefully, to ask another girl out, but when he actually does, she becomes angry and upset. Even in the end, she didn’t tell him that she had gone into labor because she knew he had a big race that day and didn’t want to bother him. Eventually, he figured out what was happening and rushed to the hospital to be there for her.
Mark Loring, the adoptive father, had an interesting and some might say not healthy relationship with Juno. They had a lot of the same interests and that created a bond that allowed them both to be themselves, where as with others they couldn’t. Juno reminded Mark of what his life use to be and he realized he wasn’t happy. Juno’s stepmother, Bren MacGuff, warned her to be careful, but she didn’t believe that Mark had ulterior motives. When he did make a proposition and told her he was getting a divorce, Juno was horrified and
