For the movie, Juno, I would like to use an alternative approach of analysis from the feminist perspective. I chose this path because this is my first movie analysis and I don’t know all the film terms or the behind the scene techniques yet to write a formal analysis. Through this class, I’m learning how to not just watch a movie, but also analytically look at one and look forward to writing a proper formal analysis later on. I specifically chose to examine this movie from the feminist viewpoint because I am a female and I can relate to certain elements from the movie. I am going to evaluate the men in Juno's life and her relationship with each one: her own father, her baby’s father, and the baby’s potential adoptive father.

Both Juno and Paulie keep their true feelings for one another to themselves. Juno assumed he didn’t want to be involved, therefore making all of the decisions herself and not involving Paulie. However, he wanted to be involved and be there for her because he loved her, but never expressed this because he thought she didn’t feel the same way. Adding to the miscommunication, Juno tells him, almost forcefully, to ask another girl out, but when he actually does, she becomes angry and upset. Even in the end, she didn’t tell him that she had gone into labor because she knew he had a big race that day and didn’t want to bother him. Eventually, he figured out what was happening and rushed to the hospital to be there for her.
Mark Loring, the adoptive father, had an interesting and some might say not healthy relationship with Juno. They had a lot of the same interests and that created a bond that allowed them both to be themselves, where as with others they couldn’t. Juno reminded Mark of what his life use to be and he realized he wasn’t happy. Juno’s stepmother, Bren MacGuff, warned her to be careful, but she didn’t believe that Mark had ulterior motives. Looking at the time periods in which these novels were written and take place, it is clear that these gender roles greatly influence whether a female character displays independence or dependence. The two main approaches to this type of criticism are very different, but help make distinctions in the text. Essentialists focus on the biologically determined sex of a character in literature, while others focus on constructivism or the qualities determined by society as strictly male or female. Constructivists argue that patriarchal gender roles harm women’s confidence and assertiveness, promoting stereotypes and false binaries. Gender constructivism favors the idea that gender and sexual categories are a societal construct that prefers men and restricts women. The application of this literary criticism to a text looks into the character and their relevance to the plot. Throughout this semester, we have come upon two playwrights and one novel, and even though they have different plots, they live a life where society is patriarchy. Back in the day, literature had feminists writers who believed society should be patriarchy and not equally. Women had no rights back then until the 1840’s. They were not allowed to write. Movie starts with a mother carrying and feeding her child. And ends with the child and mother walking together. This time gap is demonstrated with periodic evolution of examples and daily schedule of a mother. Interestingly the movie ends with maze and mercury trying to get to the center of it. With several debatable analyses that can be made about this movie a conclusion is not easy to pull out. However this movie tries to express female voice, but in symbolic manner rather then being straightforward and making female characters of the movie dominate to male character. In addition, the symbolic part is difficult to understand and needs several serious discussions to prove a point. A mother in this story representing female voice tries to be dominant throughout the movie which. Her motherhood is the main target and freedom is secondary goal.
The feminist perspective of looking at a work of literature includes examining how both sexes are portrayed
Using the movie Love Jones I will talk about the characteristics of male/male and female/female relationship as they are portrayed in the film. Then I will talk about how different the female/male relationship is and focus primarily on their communication styles. There is some harsh vocabulary included in my essay but only in quotations that I have taken from the movie itself to communicate what was going on in the scenes I have chose to talk about.
In her essay, “Women's Cinema as Counter-Cinema”, Claire Johnston proposed a path to creating Women's cinema to counter the numerous dominant male-oriented mainstream films. In it, she argues that you must first understand the ideology that is found in mainstream movies, and the ways that women are portrayed within it. She determined that there were two principle concepts to understand: how women are visually represented, and the effect that women have upon the creation of meaning within the film. The how refers to all the film techniques used in the creation of the image: lighting, hair, makeup, choice of lens, choice of wardrobe, and the framing of the camera shot are some examples. These are often done to increase the attractiveness of the female character, and creates a sign for the audience to accept and decode. The effect of the female character is limited to her physical traits and the impact that her presence has on the male protagonist, typically to send him off on an Oedipal journey.
These movies allowed female characters to embody all the contradictions that could make them a woman. They were portrayed as the “femme fatale” and also “mother,” the “seductress” and at the same time the “saint,” (Newsom, 2011). Female characters were multi-faceted during this time and had much more complexity and interesting qualities than in the movies we watch today. Today, only 16% of protagonists in movies are female, and the portrayal of these women is one of sexualization and dependence rather than complexity (Newsom, 2011).
Led by Laura Mulvey, feminist film critics have discussed the difficulty presented to female spectators by the controlling male gaze and narrative generally found in mainstream film, creating for female spectators a position that forces them into limited choices: "bisexual" identification with active male characters; identification with the passive, often victimized, female characters; or on occasion, identification with a "masculinized" active female character, who is generally punished for her unhealthy behavior. Before discussing recent improvements, it is important to note that a group of Classic Hollywood films regularly offered female spectators positive, female characters who were active in controlling narrative, gazing and desiring: the screwball comedy.
Green Lantern is a science Fiction movie directed by Martin Campbell. This movie is about a police force called Green Lantern Intergalactic Corps that uses green rings which feeds on their willpower and has a mission to protect the universe from evil. The main Character, Hal Jordan played by Ryan Reynolds is chosen by the ring and protects his planet from Parallax. His childhood sweetheart Carol Ferris played by Blake Lively supports him throughout the movie. Dr. Amanda Waller played by Angela Bassett appears a few times and brings Hector Hammond played by Peter Sarsgaard to perform an autopsy on Abin Sur’s body played by Temuera Morrison.
By dissecting the film, the director, Jennie Livingston's methodology and the audience's perceived response I believe we can easily ignore a different and more positive way of understanding the film despite the many flaws easy for feminist minds to criticize. This is in no way saying that these critiques are not valid, or that it is not beneficial to look at works of any form through the many and various feminist lenses.
Also, the film revealed women empowerment and how superior they can be compared to men. While demonstrating sexual objectification, empowerment, there was also sexual exploitation of the women, shown through the film. Throughout this essay, gender based issues that were associated with the film character will be demonstrated while connecting to the real world and popular culture.
