The story starts with a boy named Johnny Tremain, an orphan who has become an apprentice for a silversmith, Mr. Lapham. He lives with these main characters: Cilla, Isannah, Dove, and Dusty. Later on in the story, Mr. Hamilton puts in an order for a complex silver basin. Johnny accepts the order, even though his master was hesitant. Johnny Tremain burns his hand severely while completing the order by tripping and sticking his hand into a crucible filled with molten silver. He cripples his hand and is no longer able to be a silversmith. Mrs. Lapham boisterously complains about Johnny not providing for the household and just taking up food. Mrs. Lapham forbids Johnny from marrying Cilla. Johnny eventually ends up in Mr. Lorne’s. The Lyte family is very rich, and Johnny has a cup that was made by the Lytes to prove that he is a member of the Lyte family. He is accused of stealing the cup, and the Lytes take up charges against him. Rab and Cilla testify for Johnny, and he is cleared of all charges. Johnny then goes back to try and sell the cup to the Lytes. The Lytes than steal the cup from him, and Johnny escapes his house. Johnny gives up on this endeavor and accepts Rab’s offer of the paper delivery job. While delivering papers, Johnny meets some important members of the patriot group the Sons of Liberty. The Lornes treat him as if he was their family, and life improves greatly for Johnny. Johnny then participates in the Boston Tea Party. Johnny transforms from an arrogant child to a selfless man. Cilla has gone to work as a servant for the Lytes. Before the Tories leave Boston and the British fight the colonists, Lavina Lyte tells Johnny that she has looked at his claims of kinship and have found that they are true.
