In the television series Luther episode one, John Luther is a Detective Chief Inspector who let the suspect of a child kidnapping fall down which led him to be in a coma and is known for his unorthodox police skills. He is seen as aggressive, obsessive, and unrelenting when he deals with uncovering the crimes he faces. In one particular scene of the episode, Luther is interrogating the daughter of two murdered victims whom he suspects is the murderer. The scene, at first, seems pretty standard. There’s a pretty set formula for how interrogations go, at least within the realm of media like television and movies. Although the audience might not take note of the general rules of that kind of conversation, they are very likely to pick up on something that seems unfamiliar and plays with their expectations of how the scene is supposed to go. Before the camera angles were sticking to the standard form of cinematography. The change is very dramatic and is almost as if someone is looking over their shoulders during the interaction. The tension of the scene is very prominent and as the conversation goes on later you begin to see the darker aspect to the lady. Suddenly the interrogation becomes a lot more sinister because not only does Luther begin to suspect the daughter, but the audience begins to see the signs as well. In terms of the series, this bold decision of breaking the rule so early on in the show sets the bar pretty high for the rest of the series. It tells the audience that the people working on the show know how to craft a perfect scene and that they will make decisions which will enhance the narrative.
