John Henry, did he really exist or is he just a legend? The story of John Henry has been an inspiration for generations. It is not only an American folktale, but a ballad that many have sung over the years. He has been and still is a symbol of hope and freedom for many people. The protagonist John Henry competes against a steam drill in driving steel. He was determined to beat the machine even if it killed him. John Henry was an African American believed to have been a real man. Ever since John Henry was a little boy he knew he was going to be a steel driving man. This is how John Henry started working on the railroad digging tunnels. This is also where he met his opponent the steam drill. John Henry was determined not to let the steam drill take his job or the job of the other workers. He would rather die than have the steam drill beat him. He said to the captain, Oh a man ain't nothin' but a man 'Fore I'd let your steam drill beat me down, I'd die with my hammer in my hand, Lord, Lord Die with my hammer in my hand. When the steam drill died, John Henry said to the captain, Looka yonder what I see, Hole done choke, drill done broke, And you can't drive steel like me, Lord, Lord Can't drive steel like me. John Henry continued to work despite that the competition was already over. He swung that hammer till his hammer was strikin' fire and said, Shaker why don't you sing, I'm throwin' twelve pounds from my hips on down, Just listen to the cold steel ring, Just listen to the cold steel ring.
