Twenty-one years ago, over ninety-five million people turned their television sets to local and cable news channels to watch a historic car chase through Los Angeles. Born in Seneca, South Carolina on June 10th 1953, Johnny Reid Edwards was raised a Methodist and learned the values of hard work and perseverance from his father, Wallace and mother, Bobbie, while growing up in Robbins, North Carolina. Working alongside his father in the textile mill, John was taught that all Americans should be treated equally and that the voice of every man and woman in the United States should be heard. He grew up without the benefit of a private school education, something of which Edwards is, to this day, extremely proud. He was the first of his family to go to college. John attended North Carolina State University, where he graduated Magna Cum Laude in 1974 with a BS in textile technology, an impressive accomplishment by any standard. But given the values of hard work and perseverance learned by his parents, John Edwards did not quit his schooling after a BS from NC State. He continued on to the University of North Carolina (at Chapel Hill) where he graduated their law program Cum Laude in 1977. While attending law school at UNC, he met his wife, Elizabeth Anania, whom he married in 1977.
During John’s early years he lived with his parents on a slave plantation. When he got older he went to the William and Mary college. John studied law under private tutors before starting his political career off with being elected to the Virginia legislature at 21.He then became a lawyer. When it came time for him

On July 2,1964, President Lyndon Baines Johnson of Texas signed a civil rights bill that prohibited discrimination in voting, education, employment and other areas of American life. LBJ had a colorful history with this bill and it’s beliefs which lead to the question if he acted out of politics or principle when he signed that act. Although there are arguments on why the bill was based on politics, LBJ signed that bill based on his own principle. Proof of LBJ's act of principle include his time as a teacher in a colored school, his steadfast after a threat of losing the south and the election, and the constant criticism he endured for not acting earlier.

One of the first things we have learned about politics this semester is that there is a constant struggle over the true definition, especially in how broad or narrow the definition is. When Thomas Jefferson wrote that “Politics are such torment that I would advise everyone I love not to mix with them.” it is understood that he is referring to the electoral and governmental aspects of politics. If Dr. Michael Rivage-Seul and Leslie Cagan were to read this quote, they would argue that Jefferson has an extremely narrow view of politics and that if one were to desire a more accurate definition, they would have to look further than the restrictive culturally accepted definition. Martin Luther King, Jr. would also disagree with this definition but he I think he would have a bigger problem with the advice that Jefferson is giving. All three of the authors that we have looked at would, in one way or another, be forced to disagree with Jefferson based on the principles that they try to uphold and emphasize in their writings and speeches.
