There have been plenty of cases of people going to Jerusalem and then being hospitalized for being supposedly believing that they are the Messiah or that God is speaking to them. This strange syndrome is known as the Jerusalem Syndrome, which often affects people when they visit Jerusalem. This syndrome causes people to have various reactions ranging from murmuring about Jesus to burning down sacred buildings, all in the belief that the they are the Messiah or their actions are for the Second Coming. This strange phenomena has made psychiatrists wonder why Jerusalem has such an effect on people.
Jerusalem Syndrome is an interesting case where place has a major effect on the mind. The idea is that the history behind the city can be so overwhelming that it can actually cause psychological disorientation. However, some people can go to the city without experiencing any symptoms. The people who are more susceptible to Jerusalem Syndrome are people who have been previously religious and extremely faithful and may have had a sort of psychiatric imbalance. The strange behavior is often caused by the hallucinations and words that the sufferer has seen or heard. These hallucinations often convince the sufferer that they are doing the things they do for the benefit of God or because they believe that they are the Messiah. In one case, a man started to fast because he had supposedly heard God tell him to do so, which affected his personal hygiene and deprived his brain of nutrition, causing his fellow tourists to be concerned for him and for him to have more hallucinations. He often would wander around saying Jesus repeatedly, which made the people in his hostel uncomfortable. Eventually, he was put in the hospital and was treated until he could be

A hallucination is defined as a sensory perception in the absence of an externally generated stimulus (4). They are different from illusions in that in an illusion an external object actually exists and is perceived, but is misinterpreted by the individual (4). Main forms of hallucinations are be visual, auditory, and olfactory, but since we have been discussing vision and interpretation of reality lately this paper will focus only on those that are visual. After finishing this book I realized that this is somewhat true. This is a disease that has been kept a secret, and those that suffer from it keep it a hidden. It is embarrassing and those that suffer from this wish not to be identified. It has become a ritual to the person; they feel if they admit that they suffer from this that they will be labeled as “crazy'; when if fact they are not. One of our family members may have it or friends, we never know, and that’s the amazing thing because we might be able to help them but they are not willing to be open about it.
Delusion and hallucination in their different forms are the major symptom of psychotic disorders. There is a growing evidence however that these symptoms are not exclusively pathological in nature. The evidences show that both delusion and hallucination occur in a variety of forms in the general population. This paper presents and analyzes the relationship between the above major psychotic symptoms with normal anomalous experiences that resembles these symptoms in the normal population.
Schizophrenia is a mental disorder in which brain functioning is disrupted. People suffering from Schizophrenia are often unable to decipher what they are experiencing from reality. Although the person suffering from this particular illness could be highly educated and well spoken, their symptoms can make it near impossible to understand what is happening in the world around them. Some people suffer from intense audio and visual hallucinations, while others may experience slight delusions and are able to recognize the onset. Signs that usually indicate the onset of schizophrenia are not only audio and visual hallucinations, but also include delusions, thought disorder, and an inability to convey ideas and thoughts clearly to family and friends (Spearing, Melissa). The following is a look into the mindset and delusions of Susan K. Weiner, a woman who has suffered the affects of schizophrenia.
What causes people to become schizophrenic? One possibility, in Macbeth and his wife’s case is guilt. Macbeth, in trying to become king, kills some people he knew very well and was loyal to at one time. He really did not want to have to Banquo, but he felt he had to so that he could become king. He said to his wife, "We will proceed no further in this business: He hath honored me of late." (I.7.31-32) Lady Macbeth feels guilty, too. For example, after she smeared the King’s blood on one of the drunken attendants to frame him, she says, "My hands are of your color, but I shame to wear a heart so white." (II.2.63-64) Their conscience could be condemning them so loudly that it drove them crazy, literally. Or, another cause of their schizophrenia could be their passion. They strove so hard to make Macbeth king that they became totally obsessed with it. It became all they thought about and their whole being revolved around it. When Lady Macbeth finds that Macbeth has been prophesized to be king, she does not believe he is capable of fulfilling the prophecy alone. So, she says to herself, " Hie thee hither, that I may pour my spirits in thine ear, and chastise with the valor of my tongue which fate and metaphysical aid doth seem to have thee crowned withal.
To be clear, psychosis is more of a symptom of a mental disorder rather than a mental disorder of its own. This phenomenon “means experiencing things and believing them to be real when they are not; in other words, losing contact with reality” (Medical News Today, 2014). Hallucinations and delusions are two signs of psychosis which include seeing things that are not there, hearing voices, and believing in irrational thoughts. Hallucinations mainly deal with sensory experiences such as hearing, seeing, touching, and smelling things that are not there. Delusions appear often in a person’s belief system. Delusions may include omniscient thoughts of oneself as far as beliefs that the government put microchips inside everyone’s brain. Epilepsy is a condition characterized by recurrent seizures which are unprovoked by any immediately identifiable cause (Hopkins & Shorvon, 1995). It is also known as a seizure disorder. A wide range of links and risk factors are associated with the condition, but most of the time the cause is unknown. Epilepsy is one of the most common neurological disorders, affecting approximately two and half million people in the US and about 50 million worldwide. Though seizures can occur at any age, epilepsy is most commonly seen in children and the elderly. Most respond well to treatment and can control their seizures, but for some it is a chronic illness. A clinical diagnosis is the first step to finding a potential cure for the disorder.
Further, the sufferer experiences frequent hallucinations, becomes paranoid, and suspicious. In other cases, the individual becomes unable to sleep and has difficulties communicating coupled with rapid mood swings.
Unearthed skulls dating back to 6500 BCE have been discovered by archeologists to have large holes drilled into the sides of them. (1) The purpose of the drilling was to release the demon spirits that ruled inside these unfortunate beings. (2) The thought at the time was that strange, disruptive, or unexplainable behaviors demonstrated by individuals was a direct consequence of demons controlling the persons soul. These behaviors were seen not as a medical condition of any kind, but primarily relating to bad morals. There are Biblical references that Jesus cast out devils in those demonstrating irrational or crazed behaviors. Of course there are also Biblical reference that describe maniacal behavior that Jesus also healed and those individual were thought to simply be ill.
History shows that signs of mental illness and abnormal behavior have been documented as far back as the early Greeks however, it was not viewed the same as it is today. The mentally ill were previously referred to as mad, insane, lunatics, or maniacs. W.B. Maher and B.A. Maher (1985) note how many of the terms use had roots in old English words that meant emotionally deranged, hurt, unhealthy, or diseased. Although early explanations were not accurate, the characteristics of the mentally ill have remained the same and these characteristics are used to diagnose disorders to date. Cultural norms have always been used to assess and define abnormal behavior. Currently, we have a decent understanding of the correlates and influences of mental illness. Although we do not have complete knowledge, psychopathologists have better resources, technology, and overall research skills than those in ancient times.
