There have been plenty of cases of people going to Jerusalem and then being hospitalized for being supposedly believing that they are the Messiah or that God is speaking to them. This strange syndrome is known as the Jerusalem Syndrome, which often affects people when they visit Jerusalem. This syndrome causes people to have various reactions ranging from murmuring about Jesus to burning down sacred buildings, all in the belief that the they are the Messiah or their actions are for the Second Coming. This strange phenomena has made psychiatrists wonder why Jerusalem has such an effect on people.
Jerusalem Syndrome is an interesting case where place has a major effect on the mind. The idea is that the history behind the city can be so overwhelming that it can actually cause psychological disorientation. However, some people can go to the city without experiencing any symptoms. The people who are more susceptible to Jerusalem Syndrome are people who have been previously religious and extremely faithful and may have had a sort of psychiatric imbalance. The strange behavior is often caused by the hallucinations and words that the sufferer has seen or heard. These hallucinations often convince the sufferer that they are doing the things they do for the benefit of God or because they believe that they are the Messiah. In one case, a man started to fast because he had supposedly heard God tell him to do so, which affected his personal hygiene and deprived his brain of nutrition, causing his fellow tourists to be concerned for him and for him to have more hallucinations. He often would wander around saying Jesus repeatedly, which made the people in his hostel uncomfortable. Eventually, he was put in the hospital and was treated until he could be
