Jane “Eyre”
Jane Eyre, Jane means woman and an eyre is a circuit court held by itinerant royal justices in medieval England. Charlotte Bronte wants us to think about Jane’s romantic rebellious acts towards the Victorian era and the consequences of those acts. Jane rebels against science and the idea of spiritual beings or natural ideals not existing. Bronte argues the ideas of Romanticism true and Victorian ideals false or wrong. This causes the book to have many references to spiritual links.
In Jane Eyre, there are many Romantic references, like weather affecting mood on a literal level and Mr. Rochester references Jane to an elf, or a fairy. In the book, Jane hears Mr. Rochester’s voice calling her from far away. She also claims to see her uncles ghost in the red room. The ideas of a connection to the spirits as well as referencing Jane’s mood mirroring the weather are Romantic beliefs. If it is rainy then she is shy or weary. But if it is sunny, then she is happy and or something joyful is going to happen. This is an idea of being connected to nature. These rival against Victorian beliefs.

She rebels against the Reeds, then tries to do what she wants at Lowood, says no to Mr. Rochester’s proposal to marriage on their wedding day, also denies St. John’s proposal to marriage, and then leaves St. John. The consequences of her rebellions were good. Her rebelling against the Reeds is where the book starts. This rebellious act was good for the fact that she left a house she didn’t like. Then her rebellious tone at lowood sent her to befriend Helen and Miss Temple. When she denied Rochester, she found her cousins unknowingly. Then when she denied St. John, she heard Mr. Rochester’s voice and went back to help him and mary him.
