Who is a hero? In contemporary times, usage of the term has become somewhat of a cliché. Over the years, the term “hero” has become representative of a wide variety of individuals, each possessing differing traits. Some of the answers put forth by my colleagues (during our in-class discussion on heroism) as to whom they consider heroes pointed to celebrities, athletes, teachers and family members. Although the occupations differed, each of their heroes bore qualities that my classmates perceived as extraordinary, whether morally or physically. Nonetheless, Webster’s defines “hero” as “a person who is admired for great or brave acts or fine qualities.” Thus, it is worth considering that individuals become heroes relative to the situation with which they’re faced.
Throughout this movie you see portrayed reluctance by all parties. John Dunbar, who is played by Kevin Costner, is reluctant to meet the Sioux for fear of getting killed. He believes in the view that all Indians are bad and they are going to kill him. His view is drastically changed as the movie goes along. You notice this particularly when he goes hunting for buffalo with the Indians. He sees the whole tribe getting excited about the prospect of food for the winter. And then when the buff...
Typically a hero is seen wearing tights, or working in secret, but in reality heroes are ordinary people doing extraordinary acts. A hero is someone who is admired or idealized for courage, outstanding achievements or noble qualities. In Harper Lee’s “To Kill a Mockingbird”, Atticus Finch is a true hero. Atticus is definitely a hero as proven by his morality, his courage and finally his abilities as well as intelligence.
“Go my children; remember the just chief of the palefaces, and clear your own tracks from briers!”(The Prairie; pg.123) The trapper, Natty Bumppo, is remembered as one of the greatest chief of all palefaces. He is represented as the good and bad of both cultures, which shows more concern for others than him. Natty, was a skilled warrior that no matter what the consequences were he was up for a challenge. In addition to Natty, he was a symbol to both the white and red skins. By the end of Natty’s life, he had accomplished uniting Indians and Whites. Whoever thought, Natty Bumppo who shows more concern for the holiness of life, be responsible, as a hunter and a fighter, for so many deaths.

...views of these people and what they are expected to be, is taken away as the viewer realizes that the life of the natives is very common and understandable. This film almost goes to prove that often the reason that a certain group is tagged by prejudice views, is because little is known about where they are coming from, how they live or what they are experiencing in life. The film Dances With Wolves does a good job of proving that often our stereotypical views of others are inaccurate, and that the Native Americans of the west were not all that different from the whites that also inhabited the plains.
Two qualities that many heroes possess are bravery and honesty. In the excerpt “Deerslayer Escapes”, Natty Bumpo exhibits these two traits when he returns to accept his punishment for killing a great Huron warrior. His punishment for killing is death. Knowing this and still returning to the tribe shows tremendous bravery. After Deerslayer returns, Cooper writes the reaction of the tribe. The leader, Rivenoak, describes Natty of being brave and honest, by saying, “ Paleface, you are honest. We shall treat you as a brave.” Natty Bumpo speaks of his own honesty when he refuses to take their compromise for death. The solution is against what Deerslayer believes in so he doesn’t go along with the plan.

What is a hero? A hero can be classified as a number of things. A hero can be a person who in the opinions of others has heroic qualities or has performed a heroic act and is regarded as a model or ideal. Ervin Staub, a holocaust survivor from Hungary and as scholar on altruistic behavior, has written, "Goodness like evil often begins in small steps. Heroes evolve; they aren't born. Very often the rescuers make only a small commitment at the start, to hide someone for a day or two. But once they had taken that step, they begin to see themselves differently, as someone who helps. What starts as mere willingness becomes intense involvement." The business man, Oskar Schindler, demonstrated a powerful example
One characteristic of an American Hero that Nathaniel relates to is that he is a loner. He does not belong to any particular group of people or society. Nathaniel seeks justice above all things and always puts the mass of people first to save them. Nathaniel also possesses traits of a hero by having a damsel in distress, in Last of the Mohicans Nathaniel’s damsel in distress is Cora Munro. He does anything to make sure she is safe and protects her at all costs. As most heroes do, Nathaniel has a sidekick, Major Duncan Heyward. Heyward assists Nathaniel in obtaining justice and protecting Cora. For example , in the end of the movie the Hurons want to kill Cora as revenge for the death of Magua’s children and Nathaniel proposes that they take him rather than Cora but Heyward offers up himself , sacrificing himself to protect Cora by giving her a better chance of surviving with Nathaniel. As Heyward is being burned alive , Nathaniel uses his super power, which is to make accurate shots using a rifle, to save Heyward by shooting and killing him to put him out of his misery. Nathaniel defeats the Hurons and saves his damsel in distress all in the name of justice, as any American
There are other scenes in the film that shows how these Indians might be portrayed as brutal savages. For example, when Dunbar was venturing about, he came into contact with a woman, who by her way of dressing was mistaken for an Indian woman, that was on the verge of suicide. After her ranting and raging, she fainted, and he then carried her back to her village. Instead of the Indians showing gratitude, some showed fear, while one man dragged the injured woman away from Dunbar and closer to his people. Another time, which is connected to this same woman, was when her family was brutally and heartlessly killed by Indians, and she alone remained to remember the episode in her past.
When Dunbar realizes that the Indians know where he lives, he becomes extremely paranoid and spends his days preparing the fort for another confrontation. He buries all the extra materials in fear that they might fall into enemy hands. On one of his daily rides around the frontier, Dunbar comes across an Indian woman crying under a tree. He sees the imminent danger from the woman’s self-inflicted wounds and determines it is his duty to return the woman to the Sioux camp. Dunbar dresses in his best uniform and shines his boots to prepare for the meeting. When the Sioux spot Dunbar they are immediately alarmed and confront him ready to kill. Kicking Bird, a Sioux holy man and the first Sioux to know of Dunbar’s existence, discourages the fight claiming that the white man is not there to fight. Wind In His Hair, a fierce warrior, tears the Sioux women from Dunbar’s grasp and the lieutenant is allowed to go freely. That following evening the Sioux council discussed what they would do with their new neighbor and decided that Kicking Bird and Wind In His Hair would revisit Dunbar’s fort to find out why he was there.
Webster’s dictionary defines a hero as any man admired for his courage, qualities or exploits, especially in war. Some people attribute the term hero mostly to war. My personal definition of a hero is someone who takes a stand against evil or an unjust cause. The term hero can be applied to anyone, it isn’t necessary to save the world from explosion to be a hero. The act of standing up for a friend can also be called a heroic act.
