Similar but Different
Just about every human being loves a beautiful view. Some may prefer an ocean landscape and others a mountain range, but nevertheless everyone loves some sort of landscape. At the Dallas Museum of Art, viewers can observe many paintings that feature scenic views of nature from a variety of artists including Claude-Joseph Vernet and J. M. W. Turner. Bonneville, Savoy and Mountain Landscape with an Approaching Storm are two paintings that can particularly catch visitors’ eyes with their dynamic colors and uniqueness. While these paintings both represent the same era and have similar compositions, they feature distinct moods and emotional intensity.
In J. M. W. Turner’s Bonneville, Savoy the viewers’ eyes immediately look to the vibrant blue of the sky, causing an almost instant impression of peacefulness and tranquility on the viewer. As the viewer’s eyes drift …show more content…

This painting includes many of the same elements as Bonneville, Savoy as it incorporates a mountain range and a similar bridge crossing over a river running through it. However, this piece of art features a violent storm in the distance making half of the painting noticeably darker, thus creating a unique contrast of light and dark as it attempts to create a darker mood. The use of diagonal lines and different textures through ominous clouds and a thundering waterfall further emphasize the motion and ferocity of the approaching storm. In Turner’s painting, the people are portrayed as relaxed as they enjoy the gorgeous view but, in this painting, the people seem startled and panicked, quickly trying to get to safety because of the approaching danger. This painting seems to depict a dramatic scene that attempts to signify the contrast between tranquility and chaos which effectively makes the viewer feel more of the emotional elements of
