Is technology changing our generation for the worst? Our generation's social aspect, education, and communication has been immensely altered by new technology. It is not a shock that technology has hurt our society, considering the easy access to technology it was just a matter of time before it would negatively change our generation.
Some people would strongly disagree, believing that the technology has not changed us, for it has been beneficial to the world today. Brian Jung, who wrote the article “The Negative Effect of Social Media on Society and Individuals”, says.“ The immediacy provided by social media is available to predators as well as friends. Kids especially are vulnerable to the practice of cyber-bullying in which the perpetrators, anonymously or even posing as people their victims trust, terrorize individuals in front of their peers”. Brian proves in his article that technology is one of the main causes for cyberbullying. More bullying has been occurring because of the advancement in technology. Once again Brian Jung said “ According to Cornell University's Steven Strogatz, social media sites can make it more difficult for us to distinguish between the meaningful relationships we foster in the real world, and the numerous causal relationships formed through social media”. There is now more fake relationships and friendships because of all the easy access to hide yourself online, which can be extremely unsafe for anyone. Compared to some older ways of teaching, new ways of teaching are evolved around technology.Benjamin Herold,who wrote the article, "Technology in Education: An Overview” says ,“Technology is everywhere in education: Public schools in the United States now provide at least one computer for every five students. They spend more than $3 billion per year on digital content.” Schools are spending large amounts of money on technology for the classrooms. Students are pushed to use technology so it will "benefit" them academically, but in reality it is making their education come to a standstill.Yvette Keohuloa, who wrote "The Four Negative Sides of Technology” states,” Children who always use search engines may become very good at finding information—but not very good at remembering it. In addition, the article said, children who use too much technology may not have enough opportunities to use their imagination or to read and think deeply about the material.”Websites such as google can be used to find information quickly. Students can find answers to schoolwork without having to do any work. This makes kids rely on the internet and not learn anything.
