Is Romeo and Juliet Relevant in Today’s Society ? Many old stories and plays still remain relevant in today’s society. The Tragedy of Romeo and Juliet, by William Shakespeare,is a play in which a pernicious and portentous feud between two families causes a pair of lovers taking their lives. While many themes portrayed by Romeo and Juliet are not as relevant as they were back then, many still remain relevant. By comparing gender, morality and the nature of love in today’s society and Romeo and Juliet, it is clear that Romeo and Juliet remains relevant in today’s society. Gender roles sculpt many of the scenes and events that occur throughout Romeo and Juliet and there are many tragic events in today’s society that result from gender roles that have been established . In 2001, a couple in Alinagar, India was executed do to their relationship going against the gender role set by their parents in which the family must find a suitor for their daughter. In fact, through advancements in brain research, cunning researchers have procured information on the teenage brain showing that,“ the part of the brain that requires a person to make responsible decisions, understand consequences and process problem-solving is under heavy construction, and much of the time dysfunctional “(Wolner 1). This shows why teenager might sometimes have irrational, illogical and impulsive behavior and why teenagers might question morals and beliefs they have been taught as Juliet did when she denies to marry Paris. In regards to why this helps show why Romeo and Juliet remains a relevant play in today’s society, this shows that teenagers will always continue to develop morals and see things as right when others might not, much like Juliet and Romeo
