What is the difference between a hero and villain? Many think that one is good and one is evil, but is there any difference? A hero is one who seeks to protect those who cannot protect themselves. Did either Hamlet or Claudius show this trait? The story of Hamlet is set in Denmark around 1300 – 1499 AD where the prince, Hamlet, loses his father and the royal family is in turmoil. Hamlet desires to leave the kingdom, but his mother and stepfather will not allow it.
CLAUDIUS. “In going back to school in Wittenberg, It is most retrograde to our desire, And we beseech you, bend you to remain Here in the cheer and comfort of our eye… our son.” (1.2.117-120)
In the play, Hamlet is portrayed as the hero; and Claudius, the villain. However, Hamlet shows that he is no better than his uncle because Claudius at least shows that he feels regret for his actions. Hamlet makes himself out to be the victim, which is childish; and he feels as if his anger towards his uncle is justified. Hamlet had already committed murder in his heart then later with his hands. Just as his uncle had killed Hamlet's Father Hamlet desired to kill his uncle. When Hamlet shows his true intentions, he proves that he is not a hero, and that he is no better than his uncle. Blinded by his rage, Hamlet confronts his mother and during the conversation accidentally kills Polonius. However, instead of showing remorse, he continues to berate his mother for sleeping with his uncle; after he just killed a man. Truly, this actions shows his poor judgment and how severely someone's psyche can be affected by grief. Another reason why Claudius is not any worse than Hamlet is that he felt remorse for his actions and repented. In the end God did allow Claudius to suffer the fruits of his
