Social media has now become a very popular way for individuals to connect with one and other. With a push of a button, we are instantly connected with any and everyone who wishes to connect with us as well. With the benefits of social media, there are also negatives that come along. With the world at our fingertips, people are becoming cautious of what they say and everyone is just looking for that “perfect” picture or status to share with all their friends. The short life of social media has gotten humans to adapt very quickly to edit their daily lives and has sort of forced a filter that has now created a barrier between human conversation.

The size of phones went from big to small within the matter of years. We now even have smartphones. Phones that are able to access information from around the world with a simple touch of a button. Smartphones also give us access to social media sites like Facebook and Instagram. In an article by Stephen Marche titled “Is Facebook making us lonely?” He states that “It’s a lonely business, wandering the labyrinths of our friends’ and pseudo-friends’ projected identities, trying to figure out what part of ourselves we ought to project, who will listen, and what they will hear.”iii (Marche 2012) We tend to spend our time by comparing ourselves with others and by doing this, if we are not content with how our lives are, we tend to start feeling depressed. It has gotten to a point that we only post things just to get “likes.” The likes indicate how many people approve of what we are doing and to notify us that they’ve seen it. We try to impress people who do not really have an impact in our lives just to seem like we are interesting people. When it comes to Instagram, we post pictures that have been edited, filtered and basically all out Photoshopped all because we are projecting the identity that we are interesting people who love to have a good time and need to constantly keep proving
Technology today is more relied upon than ever before. If one needs to call someone half way around the world, simply take out a cell phone and dial their number. Within thirty seconds, one can be speaking to that person just as if two people were conversing face-to-face. In the same manner, one has access to endless knowledge and resources by the push of a few buttons or the click of a mouse. The use of social media today is becoming more prevalent than ever before because of the convenience it offers.
In the article “Is Facebook Making Us Lonely?” by Stephen Marche, the author tries to show that Facebook impacts on society in the various ways. Moreover, the purpose of this article is to convince the readers that they should really connect to each other like face-to-face contact rather than spending time online the social media. Marche states that “Facebook doesn’t destroy friendships, but it doesn’t create them either” (Marche 608). The author’s audience would be middle-aged adults and middle class in May 2012 that buy and read about the social media because they might be up sad of their life. He also discusses that social network is making us lonely, or if lonely people are addicted to the Internet. However, he states social network is “merely a tool” (608), and we can choose how to use them. Marche sounds very cynical. He is an analyst, but his article is not clear enough. The author’s situation is so complicated because he uses too much examples and stories. Stephen Marche in “Is Facebook Making Us Lonely?” is not effective in using pathos, connotative languages, tone and emotions to convince the reader that they should really connect to each other face-to-face rather than spending time online.
Marche first draws in readers using pathos, but his examples of logos throughout the article are the real selling point. After the gruesome story about Yvette, Marche begins to talk about how “we live an accelerating contradiction: the more connected we become, the lonelier we are.” He then introduces the statistics of Facebook, how there are 845 million users and how in 2011, they generated about 2.7 billion likes and comments every day. This supports his claim that we are all “transfixed by the glare of a screen, hungering for a response” and that we are now what is known as the digital era. To create a timeline image he makes “Facebook arrived in the middle” capitalized to emphasize that human loneliness was on a rise. From then on he uses statistics and expert quotes to provide evidence about how slowly people are becoming distant due to isolation. Then Marche introduces how researchers have found that people who spend more time on Facebook are more likely to develop neurotic disorders, depression, or health conditions, such as narcissistic disorder. In a day and age of a social media dominance, we have never been as densely connected and networked as we ever have. Through studies and researchers, it has been shown that we never have been as lonelier, or even narcissistic. As a result all this loneliness has not only made us mentally ill, but physically ill as well. Social Media is defined by Merriam-Webster as “forms of electronic communication (as Web sites for social networking and microblogging) through which users create online communities to share information, ideas, personal messages, and other content (as videos)” (Merriam-Webster), and for many Americans is a method of social interaction that is used often on a daily basis. It has been determined that one in five people use social media at least once a day and that 19% of Americans between the age of 15 and 54 are on sites like Facebook and Twitter(). It’s no longer common place to send handwritten letters or birthday cards, now writing on a wall, sending a tweet or snapping a picture is accepted. Although social media has provided todays society with instant forms of communication and ways to connect, it also created a new standard for living and has caused problems for many groups of citizens in all walks of life and has caused society to re-think its usage. There are two views about social media, either that. It is a positive addition to society and its benefits outweigh the risks, or that social media causes more harm than good and it’s usage should be limited.
The notion that the cell phone may one day become obsolete may never become reality. The concept of personal computing and communication (which is essentially what the smartphone is today) can never be defunct. Humans are built to connect with one another and we see instances of this throughout our lifetime. We are born into families, biological or not. We go to church to gather with our congregation. We’re sent to school to learn with other children our age. To eventually work with like-minded people, meet our spouses and have a family of our own. Our phones revolutionized even more with the bang of social media. The proliferation of social media outlets such as Facebook, Twitter and Instagram just to name a few, forever changed the dynamic of our social interactions. Through Instagram I can lie on the beaches of Cap Ferrat in the French Riviera with my cousin who visits there every year or I can open my Vine app and swim with tropical fishes in the Bahamas with my best friend Chelsi who loves the beach. In addition, cell phones enable us to interact with people we wouldn’t normally encounter. This not only permits us to learn from one other and the world around us, but we can help in times of need. Even though people have different opinions on whether social media has a positive or negative impact on society, it can be said that social media has a positive effect on society as a whole because it lets people communicate with each other easily, it has been said to improve education among children, and has helped improve the economy in the world. One of the main reasons why social media has positively affected our society is because of how it has made communicating with people much easier. “Today, four out of five active internet users maintain at least one social media profile” (Moe, 3). Using these websites, such as Facebook, Twitter, YouTube and etc., people talk about everything with anyone from what they are planning to do, to what they are eating and much more (Moe, 24). Social media has become an addiction for most, if you were to ask the average student if they were connected to a social networking site, about 73 percent would reply with a yes. In addition, about 63 percent of people log on to a social media site daily and on average 40 percent log on multiple times a day. Everyone has their own reasons for the use of social media, which could include shopping, research, or other personal reasons like venting and status updates.
