Social media has now become a very popular way for individuals to connect with one and other. With a push of a button, we are instantly connected with any and everyone who wishes to connect with us as well. With the benefits of social media, there are also negatives that come along. With the world at our fingertips, people are becoming cautious of what they say and everyone is just looking for that “perfect” picture or status to share with all their friends. The short life of social media has gotten humans to adapt very quickly to edit their daily lives and has sort of forced a filter that has now created a barrier between human conversation.

The size of phones went from big to small within the matter of years. We now even have smartphones. Phones that are able to access information from around the world with a simple touch of a button. Smartphones also give us access to social media sites like Facebook and Instagram. In an article by Stephen Marche titled “Is Facebook making us lonely?” He states that “It’s a lonely business, wandering the labyrinths of our friends’ and pseudo-friends’ projected identities, trying to figure out what part of ourselves we ought to project, who will listen, and what they will hear.”iii (Marche 2012) We tend to spend our time by comparing ourselves with others and by doing this, if we are not content with how our lives are, we tend to start feeling depressed. It has gotten to a point that we only post things just to get “likes.” The likes indicate how many people approve of what we are doing and to notify us that they’ve seen it. We try to impress people who do not really have an impact in our lives just to seem like we are interesting people. When it comes to Instagram, we post pictures that have been edited, filtered and basically all out Photoshopped all because we are projecting the identity that we are interesting people who love to have a good time and need to constantly keep proving
