Is censorship good or bad for society? We first need to know what censorship is, Google defines it as the suppression of words, images, or ideas that are offensive. The keyword in that definition is “offensive”, each person has their own idea of what is offensive and what isn’t. So the notion that we are better off with censorship is wrong because each of us have our own interpretation. Censorship is negatively impacting today's society because it violates free speech, people have less say about it, and it doesn't show the full picture.
One of the biggest and most important reasons censorship is bad is because of the fact that it violates free speech. Censorship can take away the rights that all of us have been granted. One of the most important legislatures done by The Founding Fathers was the 1st amendment, in The Bill of Rights, which says that “no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech”.What this basically means that there wouldn’t be “any” laws that confine your rights. When you allow censorship to occur you basically through all that away because it opens the door for people to decide for you, what you’re allowed or not allowed to hear and say. Censorship is harmful to our modern day society because it goes against many of the beliefs and ideas of freedom.

When the government decides what is right and wrong for people, those people lose their ability to make those judgments. Censored media and content can be easily seen in China, one of the leading countries in population, economy, etc. According to Eleanor Albert “ The Chinese government deploys myriad ways of censoring the internet.”(COFR, 2017) this can be from banning certain media to just flat out imprisoning journalist. These types of action are violations of human rights, all in the name of
Censorship, as defined in the dictionary, is, in the case of a book, to take out things thought to be objectionable. Censorship is far more than that. This mere word prohibits us from all things
It puts fire into the eyes of any self-proclaimed, speaker of the people. but is censorship bad, or wrong? Censorship is an enormous part of the stability of society. One of the many types of censorship takes place on the airwaves. Comedians, George Carlin, Howard Stern, and Mancow Muller had an enormous effect on the ideals of censorship in this era, trying to prove that the FCC had no right to censor radio airwaves.
Censorship is a concept with several different meanings. To each individual censorship has its own meaning. Is it a violation of our rights or is it a protection for our well being? Censorship in the generic sense refers to the suppression of information, ideas, or opinions. It occurs in all forms of communication from technological media to print media. Each society, culture, or individual's belief is violated by the codes of censorship that our society instills.
Freedom of speech and expression is one of the most important rights that we have in this country. Our forefathers knew this and acknowledged this in our great constitution which protects our rights as citizens in America. Censorship is a complete contradiction to this concept that has helped make America the greatest country in the world. If we do not stand up for our rights for free speech, someday it may be taken away all together. Everyday there are people out there trying to ban and censor things from Americans, things that as an American you have the right to view. Censorship must be stopped at all costs.
...tion is to educate people on the topic of censorship and how there are some instances where it violates our First Amendment rights. Cases of censorship will vary dependent upon where it is located, but the problem is still the same: people censor simply because they do not like something that another person has expressed. Perhaps a universal set of laws regarding acceptable censorship should be installed, which in turn would solve all types of censorship issues. Censorship will always be a problem, because there is always something for people to dislike. However, once more of the population has been educated on how censorship is only sometimes necessary, the problems with it may not be as prevalent. Censorship will never go away, but perhaps people will find a happy medium, in which things are censored only when necessary, and everyone is accepting of it.
Censorship has been a big part of the world’s history and especially America’s history. One of the most quoted amendments to the United States constitution is the first amendment; “Congress shall make no law…abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press ...” This amendment guaranteeing free speech, press, and religion is still heavily debated and contested today. Censorship, as a challenge to free speech and press has been allowed many times and has been heavily debated itself. Many people censor for many different reasons and in many different forms. Censorship itself is not always a bad thing and has in some cases been used for protection of the general population.
Censorship has many pro?s and con?s to it, many people disagree with it, and many support it. The debate on censorship will go on forever without ever being resolved. In this day of age censorship is more of a choice with programs on TV, Internet, and even Video Games that allow to block ones son or daughter from viewing. Censorship is a controversial word that has been with us far back as we can remember.
To understand censorship, you have to start at the beginning. Censorship, no matter the definition, is when people who have power, wish to limit the knowledge of what we are receiving, or what we are expressing. We have not always had the rights we had now. Benjamin Franklins brother and employer, was actually arrested and lost his printing license for expressing criticism in his newspaper about politics. Censorship was going strong in the Revolutionary era, when British Loyalists tarred and feathered people who spoke against Britain. Even back then, we lived in a country where our own opinions, if deemed wrong by the powerful, were quickly put to an end.
Many people have fought the long, hard battle to have our right to say and write whatever we want without fear of reprisal. One argument for censorship is that those who spout hate and bigotry should not have the right to say anything they want. You may not agree with their views or their politics, but they do have the right as American citizens to say what they want, even if a vast majority of the country disagrees. That is the beauty of our country. We set the standard for what all other countries want to be. They want free press. They want free speech. They want to be able to say what they are thinking without fear of being killed the next
The subject of censorship is a very controversial one, especially the banning of books. Many people believe they must protect themselves and others from the "evils" of many classic books and works of art because they can be deemed "indecent" in one way or another. Many believe that this is absurd and censorship in its current form is a violation of our First Amendment right to free speech. Personally, I align myself with the latter, however I do feel there are occasions where censorship is justifiable.
In my humble opinion, I believe censorship is a good thing, but I think there should not be more of it. Firstly, I believe there should not be more censorship because people have the ability to choose what they watch. Whenever a new movie comes out, the movie’s rating is available for the public to know. I believe if one knows the particular rating, it is then his or her own choice to further pursue the film. Also, most movie trailers usually show the sort of action that will take place during the film.
Tackling censorship is much more important than it appears to be at the surface; taking down censorship would help preserve the expression of thought. It would help preserve the right to listen to the unaltered forms of everything. Most importantly, it would help preserve the rapidly weakening basic right of speech. Censorship has always altered the lives of many people, whether they know it or not. People are constantly exposed to the censored version of entertainment.
Censorship allows governments more control of society than they already have, slowly progressing governments utilizing censorship to a dictatorship. Often times, this censorship can lead to immense rebellions. A good example of this is in China, where Google has been censored by a provider called The Great Firewall of China, which censors information that could be viewed as defamatory or insulting to Chinese government and culture. According to the article “Google turns off China censorship warning” as published by BBC News Technology, “Google has had a rocky relationship with the Chinese authorities since January 2010, when the company said it may shut down Chinese operations due to a ‘sophisticated and targeted’ cyber attack. Google said at the time that it was no longer willing to censor the Google search engine”. Many journalists have also taken a look at Egypt, which also utilizes censorship. According to “Egyptian authorities step up censorship” as published by the Committee to Protect Journalists website, the new military-run Egyptian government is censoring news outlets and keep journalists, as well as the Muslim Brotherhood and its affiliates. “Egyptia...
Hence censorship is essential in order to maintain peace and stability in the society. It will decrease the crime rates. Children can be exposed to sexual matters in school in a different manner as education. Excessive amount of sexual explicit material would surely be harmful. Censorship does not have a downside and it will be a better society.
Censorship affects our society in many different ways, it affects the music we listen to, the movies we watch, the books we read, and many other aspects of our everyday lives. Even though many might argue that censorship doesn't really have a place in a society that emphases freedom of speech and the freedom to express oneself, but censorship is an essential and needed part of our growing society, it's needed in the television industry, the Internet, and the music industry. Censorship helps to make our world a better place because it creates a better environment for us to live in.
