Also in Iron Man 3, Pepper Potts develops another key moment of intervention that once again saves Tony’s life. In the final “battle” scene of Iron Man 3 we come to a culmination point where Tony is down, his suit very compromised, and Killian (the villain of this story) is giving his final villainous monologue before he kills Tony - that is until Pepper emerges from the flames previously thought to have killed her, and kills Killian herself ultimately saving Tony’s life. This moment of intervention was one no one expected, as an audience, we all had watched her fall to her presumed death earlier in the same scene, and to have her reappear in the final moments and once again save the hero, it was an unexpected, but necessary move. It is always done so that the woman is put in danger, and the male hero comes in to save the day. Pepper Potts is a great example of this; multiple times in her appearances in the films has she been put in danger as a way to make the situation more intense for the audience since the risks are now higher for Tony. There are two instances in Iron Man 3 where this happens. First, when Maya Hansen pays a visit to Tony’s house and Tony, Pepper, and she are in the living room speaking, a missile is launched at the house. While Tony does save Maya (a past love interest of his), he focuses on saving Pepper, even giving her his suit to protect her from debris. He then tells Maya and Pepper to go somewhere safe which leads to the next time her life is put in danger to anger Tony. When Killian is threatening Tony, Tony does not feel he is a threat, that is until the threat becomes injecting extremis into Pepper. This angers Tony to the extent Killian wanted and “motivates” him to bring the film to its climax. Pepper’s false death in the film is also what pushes Tony to fight harder in an attempt to avenge her
