Film Analysis of Into The Wild

In 1992, after graduating from college Christopher McCandless donated all his money to charity, left his apartment, and burned the money in his wallet. Shortly after he set off to travel the United States to eventually end up dead in Alaska. Some people question his sanity for leaving behind his life. I believe that he left because his mental state had taken severe damage from the abusive household he grew up in, he was trying to leave behind what he grew up in to find something new. I also think that he was very arrogant for leaving his family without saying goodbye because he only cared about saving himself and escaping from reality.

Chris grew up in an abusive household. His parent were always fighting and they tried to turn their children against each other. When he was little he would protect his sister from his parent’s constient fighting. While his parent would fight they would try to make their children believe they had to do it. For example in the movie Christopher’s father says “Come in here and see what your mother is making me do” or from his mother “Come in here and look what your father in doing to me.” Chris’ mother told him that she got stuck in the relationship with his dad when she became pregnant with him. I believe he was arrogant because he never told his parents or any of his family that he was leaving in fear of them finding him. He only cared about his escape from reality and different care what he had to did to accomplish this. He made his family suffer just so he could escape the world. They worried about him and tried to find him but he only cared about his adventure and he didn’t care what he had to do to accomplish his goal of reaching Alaska.
