In the past twenty years the Internet has become an essential role in billions of people’s lives. Hours upon hours of people’s lives are spent on the computer. Whether the hours are spent wisely researching or doing something productive or the hours are spent looking at funny cat videos, which some people do believe is productive; the Internet has become a part of everyday life for countless people around the world. Internet addiction (IA) or also called Internet Use Disorder (IUD) was first recognized in 1996 (Grohol, 2012). Since that time it has be highly controversial as to whether or not it is an actual psychological disorder/ illness. Being a teenager, my life is highly affected by the Internet and my use of it. I find myself being on the Internet first thing in the morning when I wake and the last thing I see before I close my eyes to sleep. I had seen an article, ironically on twitter, about Internet addiction and that is what initially sparked my attention to the topic. Since that point I have noticed how much I really use and depend on the Internet throughout the day. Every time I send an iMessage I use the Internet. Since it does not create a rush like cocaine or gambling by itself (yes specific websites do but not the Internet as a whole) can the Internet even be addicting? It is acknowledged that people love to be on the Internet even for several hours of the day, but does that classify it as an addiction? That is one of the questions that psychologists debate over. DeAngelis (2000) points out in her paper that addiction may not be the right word to describe “Internet addiction” but more of am assumption that people believe that they use the Internet too
